Perimenopause & Ovulation

Hi! I was wondering if anyone who is perimenopausal has had bad cramping when they ovulate. For years now I've been tracking my period using a phone app. For about 6 months now (maybe even longer when I think back) I've been getting severe cramping for a day or two about a week after my period. I started checking the app and every time I feel this way it's during ovulation. I'm starting to wonder if this is hormone related. At first I thought it was horrible heart burn and stomach cramps. I even went to the gastro doctor and had an endoscopy, which came back normal. I'm 45, and other than my periods lasting a few days longer than normal and being more anxious, I haven't experienced any other perimenopausal symptoms I read about online. Is anyone else going through this?

Thanks!

Jenn

    Hi Jenn,

I don't ovulate very often anymore, but yes, the pain and inflammation from that can be brutal in peri. (I was 44ish when this first started for me).

I would have cramps, diarrhea (sorry if tmi), and flu-like body aches/headaches.

Can you tolerate ibuprofen or naproxen? They can help some.

My gyne offered birth control pills to suppress ovulation, but my digestive system did not agree with them... something you can ask your doctor about, if it seems like a good option for you.

Take care and let us know how you get on,

      Hi Sara,

Thank you for sharing. I will try taking some ibuprofen next month for some relief. I have a followup with my gastro doctor coming up in a few weeks. I'm going to mention all of my symptoms and hopefully he'll point me in the right direction. Otherwise I'll make an appt for my primary care doc.

I never used to have pain like this either! I'm sorry you are going through the same thing. I used to have mild PMS right before my period. Now I feel PMS-y all of the time. Ovulation hurts and now PMS comes much earlier before my period, plus all these other random symptoms that I think are related. I dont feel like myself most days.

Yeah and until I go to the docs I think it's going to drive me mad! I don't like feeling like this because everything is so random. I think I'm about to be finished with my period this month and it only lasted 4 days. A couple of months back it lasted 13 days. So far though its still pretty regular, mostly ontime but maybe a few days late here and there.
