Peritonsillar Abscess (Quinsy) My experience and Advice

I've had tonsillitus twice in Nov last year, I was perscribed penecillin and within a week it had cleared. Then on the 23rd Dec it had come back in force, but this time it had developed into a quinsy, I went to A&E and was refered to an ENT specialist the following day, who after looking at my mouth decided to drain the abcess, which was quite painful but immediatley relieving, I took a course of antibiotics and anit inflamatories and by new year it had cleared.

On th 6th Jan this year it returned, worse than it had in december, I went straight to my gp who refered me to the hospital immidiatley, they took blood tests and sent me to a ward and kept me in for 48 hours on IV antibiotics as they work much quicker than oral antibiotics. Once i left hospital, which was only last night i stared to feel worse, so straight back to A&E we went as i felt that i couldnt breathe properly and started to panic, I saw the on call ENT doctor who assured me that my airway would not fully close and that she had seen much worse cases than me (and much better cases), im now at home on a weeks course of oral antibiotics and strong pain killers.

My advice to anyone who has or even suspects a quinsy is to go straight to A&E, demand to see an ENT specialist before anything happens, and if they advise, although it isnt nice, stay in hospital and have the IV antibiotics, they work much quicker and in the long run it is worth it. Dont stay at home and suffer, this has been the most horrendous thing i've had to deal with.

I feel compelled to share my experience because unlike most of the responses in this thread I have managed to control my reoccurring peritonsillar abscess. I like everyone else went through the same grueling pain. Swollen tonsils, unable to swallow saliva, eat, drink and eventually unable to talk. Scared out of my mind I went to an urgent care and she immediately admittedly me to the ER to have it drained. Pain was relieved after the drainage but came back within a month or two. However this time I caught it before my tonsil had a chance to grow and fill with puss. I suffer from swelling around the right tonsil maybe twice a year sometimes more depending on my eating habits. (sugary foods, and dairy cause mine to come back faster) I had purchased the holy grail herb Oil of Oregano. Now this oil is extremely potent and one of the strongest oils Ive ever been in contact with. You MUST dilute it with another carrier oil, I use Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. I take a teaspoon of coconut oil and dip a Q-tip in the oil so that is completely submerged, then use a dropper to put 1-2 drops of oregano oil on top. I feel the need to warn again that this oil is extremely strong, as it is known to be one of the absolute strongest natural antibiotics. So if you have a bad gag reflex you will need to work up the courage to stick the Q-tip in the back of your throat. However if the pain is at the level I experience you will do just about anything to make it stop. Once the Q-tip has a the mixture of Oregano oil and Coconut Oil, swab it over the enflamed area usually the tonsil or behind it. I do so until it burns because I am not willing to risk any bacteria surviving. I do this as many times as needed a day and without a doubt it is gone. Sometimes if I catch an itch in my throats before I go to bed I run to bathroom and do this and wake up feeling perfect. I have learned that when I am too lazy or choose to ignore it and hope it's nothing serious I always wake up with a sore and enflamed throat. This is not a diagnosis or a cure by any means because I do believe that the initial drainage procedure never got all the bacteria out which is why it always comes back. But this is just how I deal with the pain and how I prevent it from ever reaching the maximum level of pain like before. I hope this helps the next person who goes through this horrible illness.

Hi, I read this forum when I was ill with my quinsy as there is little information about it!

I was hospitalised in September with a sever burst Quinsy, my blood levels were through the roof (highest they have seen apparently, yay me) and I was told on leaving hospital that I was very lucky I didn't develop sepsis and I could have died...this was all a bit shocking

Anyway, I am still really tired almost 9 months later and if I do too much (which was previous a totally normal amount) I feel like I have ran out of batteries? I eat really healthily but am so tired all the time still and not sure if it should be taking me this long to recover!

has anyone else experienced this after a quinsy? I cant seem to find much information about recovery times etc x
