Pernicous anemia

Hi all. I have not been on forum for sum time. I was diagnosed with pernicious anemia 15 years ago. I have been having b12 injections every three months and was taking a folic acid tablet once a day. I have recently moved house and have a new GP who have stopped my folic acid tablet. My health condition now is horrible as I have constant stiffness and pins and needles in my hands. Can anyone please tell me if they have the same symptoms after stopping the folic acid tablet. King regards Amanda.

Hi Amanda/ Do you know why you were taken off of the folic acid? Do some research on methylated folate vs folic acid. I have just started taking the methylated form. Also, do you know your Vitamin D level? A deficiency in Vitamin D can undermine things also.

It is important that your Folate level is monitored as this is essential to process the B12.

There is a complex interaction between folic acid, vitamin B12 and iron. A deficiency of one may be "masked" by excess of another so the three must always be in balance.

Symptoms of a folate deficiency can include:

    symptoms related to anaemia

    reduced sense of taste

    diarrhoea

numbness and tingling in the feet and hands

    muscle weakness

    depression

Folic acid works closely with vitamin B12 in making red blood cells and helps iron function properly in the body

Your doctor should be treating your symptoms not just looking at the computer screen.

Personally I have taken 1 – Folic Acid 400µg every day for more years than I can remember and it can be bought very cheaply "over the counter" at your local pharmacy or supermarket without prescripttion

I am not a medically trained person but I've had P.A. (a form of B12 deficiency) for more than 45 years.

    I wish you well
