Peroneal Subluxation

The tendon on the outside of my ankle "flicks" out and causes a painful popping sound, has anyone had this before? How did you get treatment?
Thanks,
Sam

I've been having similar symptoms, but mine isn't painful. Just feels odd and is annoying. The doctor said that technically, it wasn't peroneal tendon subluxation.
Yours sounds more like the real deal. It's usually caused by a ligament called the retinaculum, which is supposed to hold the tendon in place. However, if it tears or gets damaged, it is unable to keep the tendon from popping out of the groove that's located behind your outer ankle bone.
From the little research I've done, there are two basic ways to fix it: 1. Rest your foot by putting it in a boot for about 6 weeks. However, the success rate for this method isn't very good. 2. The other option is surgery followed by some weeks in a boot or cast. I would opt for the surgery instead of the former, which seems like a waste of time due to the poor success rate.
Good luck and keep us posted how you're doing!

Hi Steve, thanks for the update, I'm going through physio at the moment for it but it's making no difference, don't know where to go from here. Might need to ask them for a referral to orthopaedics? I'll update when I get something sorted, tbh, I'd take time in a boot right now, it's been killing me.

Hi Sam,
Yes, might be good to consult with an orthopedic specialist.
So, does it happen all the time or just occasionally? Did it begin after an injury, or just occur out of the blue?
I know how annoying it is to have this. Mine began out of the blue after weeks of physical therapy following a broken ankle. The clicking/flicking would occur with every step I would take. But lately, it's been subsiding and is now most noticeable in the mornings when I get out of bed. It usually fades as the day wears on.
Yes, keep me posted on yours. I'd like to know how you're doing.

Hi Steve, yeah i get it all the time, it was after an ankle sprain, i felt a pop behind my ankle bone but didnt seek treatment. It was quite painful, not as painful now but i get sporadic aches and sharp pains in it, I just wish it would settle down. GP wont refer me to orthopaedics now, only to physio which im already doing a course of.

Hi Alan,
My issues are still ongoing, recently seen a Foot and Ankle consultant privately and got given a brace and physio to do, he said physio doesnt really do the trick so a surgery is also possible. i think its a lengthy recovery though.
