Persistent Ankle Sprain Symptoms (Over a Year)

Hey all,

I sprained my ankle in April of last year and despite it only being a grade two sprain of my ATFL, it never healed properly; albeit, I didn't follow any rehab program and starting squatting and running a week after.

Anyway, a year later I feel massive restriction in the joint and had an MRI that revealed a partially thickened ATFL, a possible anterolateral ankle impingement, and a grade 1/2a anteromedial osteochondral lesion. I am focused on treatment for the impingement as I feel that to be the most severe, but I have pain at the front of the joint that prevents me from doing any exercises with an emphasis on improving dorsiflexion; there is also a sharp pain where my Achilles tendon attaches to my calcaneus which seems to have no rhyme or reason. To add on, any exercises focusing on plantarflexion cause immense pain as well, such that I can't even swim (something we are told to do for ankle rehabilitation).

In essence, I am unable to do exercises that should treat my condition and am at a standstill.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You sound like me! it has been almost a year since my ankle sprain and since the MRI was clean, i walked on it as normal. a new MRI showed a sprain still of the ATFL but pain is primarily in the peroneal tendon for me. As MRI is clean, the only option is a huge incision to explore the tendon and see if there is any thickening or small tear but this would take a year to recover and i keep hearing about people who end up with nerve damage or worse pain afterward. i just got a PRP injection but it will take a while to see if it works. what does your doc recommend? this is so frustrating, i want to walk and bike again!!!!
