Phenindione shortage of supplies

Posted , 7 users are following.

After struggling to get further supplies of this anti-coagulant, I was prescribed Fragmin and given a 30 day supply. of syringes as a temporary measure. No further information and the GPs/pharmacists have no information about when supplies will be available. I therefore telephoned Mercury Pharma and the latest news is that supplies to pharmacies will start again in three weeks. Perhaps a few more anxious patients should be telephoning this pharmaceutical company's customer services ( 020 8649 8500 or 020 8686 0807) to register their concerns about being left without appropriate medication and no reliable information about future supplies.

Thanks for alert. Odd that this keeps happening despite MHRA's reassurances about future supplies. I received an email from Haematology Consultant at Derriford only a couple of weeks ago saying that supplies were back and I'm about to request a repeat prescription via my surgergy's website. Will report back on what response I get.

It doesn't get any better! My repeat prescription was delivered yesterday with note attached which reads:

'Due to shortage we can't get hold of new batch of Phenindione. I'm sending 4 boxes, but these expire 19.04.2014; Please do not use after this date. Thanks'

So now I've got 28 days supply which, according to pharmacist's advice, must not be used. I'll be contacting MHRA again

    Afternoon all,

my pharmacist has kindly rung to inform me that 10mg are back in stock. I have no idea of the expiry date, but will let you know when I have my delivery tomorrow.

    best wishes

    thanks Nic,

I emailed MHRA on Monday, 7 April and received an acknowledgement but, so far, no response as to what the manufacturer's excuse is for continuing breaks in supply. I have a haematology appointment at Derriford tomorrow and will raise this with the consultant again. What we need is support from the medical professionals but so far this isn't forthcoming and I get raised eyebrows when I tell them about and show them copies of responses received from MHRA.

I will post as soon as I receive a reply from MHRA and, for the present, I guess all we can do is to request repeat prescriptions for 10mg

    be well

Hello everyone following this 'non-supply of Phenindione' thread. Yesterday I received the following reply from MHRA to my enquiry on 7 April:

'Further to my email earlier today, the Department of Health’s Medicines Supply Team have confirmed that the company that markets phenindione tablets in the UK ‘AMCo’ has experienced manufacturing difficulties and is currently out of stock of phenindione 25mg and 50mg tablets. The company is working to resolve the issues it has experienced and expects supply of the 25mg strength to resume by the end of May 2014. Supplies of the 10mg strength remain available and the company says that pharmacists should be able to obtain stocks from their normal wholesaler.

Finally got a delivery of Phenindione 10mg today with a use by date of 30 September 2014.  Note attached from pharmacist advises that 25mg  tablets is still unavailable and suggesting that I continue to request repeat prescriptions for 10mg. I'm beginning to wonder about the efficacy of Phenidione as my INR levels have fluctuated wildly since using the out of date stuff (as advised by Haematology Consultant) and I'm having to t'to up' with Fragmin injections.

    How are you all managing?

    be well
