Physical activities

Hi everyone

Am due a LHR in early January and looking ahead I am

wondering whether I will still be able to do the physical things

around the house that I can still do at the moment; an example of which is gardening. I have a ride on mower that has a heavy

(when full) grass catcher and wonder whether I will still be able to pick it up and empty it?

I know this seems trivial when compared with some of the

problems a lot of you guys are having; but the closer I get to the op the more I worry about being able to live my life the way I am

at present; albeit with a diet that includes plenty of co-codamol!!

Hi david. I can only go by my experience. Gardening for the first 6 weeks ...no. im just starting to garden. ..kneel.... lift light weights...and im 10 wks. You have a 90 degree rule you should obey.....you dont want to dislocate your hip. . Good luck with the op. Its brilliant. A new lease on life.

    David,

I'm afraid Sassybees is right, no gardening, bending, picking up heavy things for 6 weeks due to dislocation prevention.

Hopefully after that, we can build up slowly to do the gardening - I hope so as we have a 60 x 150 foot back garden cheesygrin and my wife cannot look after that by herself.

Hi David, for the first six weeks You MUST take it easy .Please make sure that you have got a good team of helpers around you. It will not be easy but if you dont do this it will slow your healing prosess down . regards Amanda

    Hi David ,

Everyone here who responded is right ...   first 6 weeks are a big no to bending, breaking 90 degree rule, lifting, pushing etc ...

depending on what your surgeon tells you at follow up appointment, some restrictions might be lifted ... heavy lifting might still be out for longer ...

I don;t think you will be able to live the life you are currently living ...

it will be so much better !!!!

    big warm hug

    Hi david,

Are you in UK? If so you will not need the grass catcher until next spring when the grass starts growing again. Good timing in my opinion.

You cannot bend for quite a while after THR and lifting is a bit of a no-no at first.

People on this website go back to quite physical jobs after a hip replacement so you will be able to do things just the same as now. It will take time though.

Also the fitter you are pre-op the better your body will bounce back afterwards.

    Best wishes

Hi David, I am 8 months post lthr, mostly I now do everything I could years before my op. In the months leading up to it my ability to do physical things diminished rapidly... even walking was getting difficult, no fun with a half hour drive and 10minutes walk to work and back each day, with a physical job between. If I hadn't had my thr I would have had to pack up work, is your up gonna get better?... stay the same ?...or get worse?... the decision to get thr is yours, but listen to your surgeon and your body.

    Any, Jay.

ps I don't take any painkillers now unless I get a headachesmile

      Hi Jay

I must admit driving has been 'uncomfortable' for a long time

now; and not being able walk more than half a mile without

getting that shooting pain that goes down below the knee has made me realise that I don't really have a choice if I want to

continue to be active in the future.

      All the best
