Pilates and Yoga

I've been doing Pilates, yoga, aqua, static bike and some weights every week day since May to get fit for my op. I know I will have to do much more modified exercise post op, the exercise I currently do is quite modified because some I just can't do. My question is has anyone got back to doing yoga and Pilates? As I do the exercises I am mentally noting that there are so many I won't be able to do afterwards.

Thanks

Ann

I am walking on the treadmill at a slow pace. Haven't been able to do any of my beach body cardio dvd's ... per the doctor. I am a 6 day a week workout freak. It's killing me but it will definitely be baby steps. Good luck!

Well done for persevering with pre op exercises ..

Im a Pilates and yoga teacher and had my THR Right last Nov ..I too was doing mine ....it took me a good 3 months to get back to work ,doing modified exercises ,but the game changer for me was being in the pool and doing my standing leg work ..it made such a difference ..

My leg still gets achey and tired but I'm back up to my teaching schedule ,there will be some moves I won't do again, but my confidence is back and I'm doing just fine

Hope this helps and all the very best Gx

Gail.  Curious- did u have the anterior or posterior approach?? I'm 5 weeks post op and plan to head to my gym to begin some bike work for strengthening.

I was posterior ..with a fracture at top of thigh bone which was bound in ..So recovery was maybe a little bit longer ,it was through the winter also which didn't help ...found bike helpful..but no resistance to start ..take care .😀

Thanks Gail that's very reassuring. Which moves are you not able to do? Can you do certain moves just on your unoperated side? I need to try and keep my right hip strong and flexible to try and avoid having that one replaced for as long as possible. Also did you have ceramic?

      Regards

      Ceramic and titanium..

I can now lie on both sides ,I have restricted movement with things like knee to thigh ..internal rotation (but working on that 😬wink ..biggest thing was losing strength in glute...so shoulder bridge ,standing leg extensions stuff like that ..Am much better now ..still go for physical therapy and deep tissue massage .

Personally,I think we are rushed too quickly into physio ,then we don't get it for long enough ..but my physio kept saying "you'll be ok,you know what you're doing " Not what I needed to hear ,when I literally could hardly walk .

    Hi Ann

I'm nearly 7 weeks post operation with anterior approach and my physio is suggesting I start pilates classes they run at the physio practice in September.  Im not sure how this compares to a typical class as most of the class will be patients of the physio practice but she said I could then move on to a more advanced class elsewhere.  I was running up to a few weeks before surgery and spinning 5 or 6 times a week which has really helped my recovery.  I've got my post operation check on Saturday and am hoping to get the all clear to resume spinning.  Im currently using my treadmill to walk for an hour at 3 mph to build up walking stamina.  I've found a zero impact running machine and plan to use this to train and then use my road bike for cardio activity.

Yes I went back to Pilates at8 weeks, also Health Circuits are available on GP referral at my local gym , which are gentle and ideal for post hip . Started treadmill, and stat bike for short times at 3 months. Tho back walking dogs 5k at 6 weeks! Just listen to your body which will tell you if you overdo it!!  I've had ups and downs probably due to doing too much !!😡😡. I was back trying to compete at dog agility at 4 months and now at 8 months am doing almost as well as the consultant promised, tho admit not as well as I'd like😩😩😩. Think that the often quoted 'it takes a year to get full benefit ' is probably right, although I didn't want to believe that. Best of luck and take it easy when necessary. Best wishes K

Yes, but you need a teacher who knows what they are doing, someone properly qualified for post-operative conditions.
