Piriformis and sciatic nerve

Hello all,
Since June I have had very bad pains in my right buttock. I believe the problem started when I was doing high (higher than usual) leg lift exercises. For months the problem has continued and about a month ago I started to see a chiropractor. I've done some research on my own with reading and videos online and the suggestion by most was not to see a family physician but to visit a chiropractor. Therefore, I have and am receiving stim (electrical stimulation, and adjustments once a week. Although advised by the office that these things take time and isn't something that heals overnight, I seem to be getting no relief. I use ice on/off throughout the day on my lower back, and the pain seems to be mainly in my right buttock, with sciatic pain that shoots down my leg and is very painful. I also have groin pain and can tell I am walking strangely because of all of this. He had me on 3 stretch exercises but just reduced me to 1 and said not to overdo it. I don't feel I am but, ugh.... painful and prolonged. Any suggestions?

maybe go to an orthopedic physician for a diagnosis. nothing against chiropractors. you may be able to self refer to physical therapy.

Before we do anything else I'm advised we'll most likely do an MRI. Let's see see what happens. Thanks for your reply.

Hi Maria
My periformis was released by a cortisone injection done by ultrasound into the front of my hip. It was a weird sensation, both hot and cold at the same time. I felt it moving to the triangle above my bum. It did not take the pain away but it helped to loosen the tightness of that muscle. My sciatic pain, back and knee pain has all gone since I had both hips replaced.

Let's see if we can avoid that. As I stated above, I'm advised we'll most likely do an MRI. Thank you for your response.

You have my sympathy; it is a painful condition. I developed it 2 years after a total hip replacement and went to see an osteopath! It helped for a little while and since then I have had steroid injections at the top of one leg. Pain then moved to the Coxyx and it was a very painful injection because I am very slim. However it seems to be helping.
I do hope you find some effective pain relief

Hip replacement, wow. I'm early 50s - Iet's hope it doesn't come to that. I appreciate your response. We are first going to work on an MRI.

Lumbar Epidurals anyone?
Okay, so months later my lower back pain isn't as bad, but now it's major stiffness throughout the back. Went to see a spine doctor and he suggested I receive lumbar epidural? Any feedback on those?
