Pityriasis Rosea lasting 8 MONTHS

In late July of 2015 I had a sore throat, I ended up having to go to the hospital I was so sick. They gave me a shot of penicillin and some diflucan. A few days later I felt some itchy dry spots on my back. I thought I had been bit by something. I went to a dermatologist and he did a biopsy that came back with viral xanthem. He said its pityriasis. Since then I've tried everything to get rid of it. Selsun blue, lotions, triamcinilone cream, and tanning. The tanning helps but it comes back if it stop for more than a day or two. It went away mostly but flares right back up. It's horrible on my stomach and a little on my arms. I have a few spots on my legs, face and butt. My back is moderately covered. Could the skin biopsy be wrong? Could this be something else? Is there anything I can try, I'm so desperate. It's almost summer again (April 2016) and I want to go to the beach but I feel so gross.

Hi, you are not alone - I have had it for the best part of a year now (started April 2015). I have seen 2 dermatologists - the first said it was PLC and the second PR. The only treatment (other than topical creams and waiting it out) that they both recommended was a course phototherapy - 3 sessions per week for 6 weeks. Where I live there is a 3 month waiting list and the hospital is an hours drive away and as I am due to have a baby in 2 weeks I have opted to postpone treatment and see if the rash clears up after my baby is born and my hormones have regulated as it will not be practical for me to travel an hour 3 times a week with a newborn for treatment. The Bly consolation is that the rash no longer itches it causes discomfort but it does look unsightly which is frustrating with summer approaching! Good luck - hopefully we'll both get rid of this at some point!! Just got to hang in there.

Bless your heart.  It sounds like PR to me by your description.  My lasted from Sept 5th to about Christmas of 2015.  I had flare ups too. It would take them about 2 weeks to improve each time.  Tanning helped them dry out for me.  Head and shoulders used as a bath wash in the shower with only luke warm water helped relieve the itching.  I used coconut oil to moisturize and some hydrocortisone cream for ithcing too.  It will eventually go away if it's PR - some cases just last longer - up to 8 months is what I read on here.
