Pivmecillinam hydrochloride (Selexid) with food

Posted , 2 users are following.

The manufacturers instruction is "take 200mg every 8 hours for 14 days. ....Take with or just after food or a meal" i have gastro oesophogeal reflux disease and normally cannot eat anything after 4pm until getting up in the morning otherwise i suffer severe acid reflux symptoms. The only way of following the every 8 hours discipline is to take a tablet late in the evening say 11pm followed by 7am and 3pm the latter two can fit in to my routine food intake wise but the 11pm one does not. The reason for the "with food" advice is that it reduces the risk of ulcers in the oesophagus. What constitutes "food" in this context? At the 11pm slot would half a banana suffice to achieve the aim of avoiding ulcers? Drinking a full glass of water with each tablet as advised is a given. Has anyone else encountered this conundrum? Would appreciate some guidance.

Q: What constitutes "food" in the context of taking medication with food?

A: Any solid or liquid food substance that is swallowed, but some foods are better than others for reducing the risk of stomach upset and other side effects. Examples of good foods to eat with medication include bread, cereal, crackers, rice, yogurt, milk, cheese, and peanut butter.

Q: Would half a banana suffice to achieve the aim of avoiding ulcers?

A: Yes, half a banana is likely to be enough to reduce the risk of ulcers in the oesophagus when taking medication with food.

Q: Has anyone else encountered this conundrum?

A: Yes, many people with GERD have difficulty taking medication with food at bedtime.

    Tips:

Eat a small, bland meal or snack at least 2 hours before bedtime.

Avoid eating fatty, spicy, or acidic foods before bedtime.

Take your medication with a glass of water or milk.

If you have acid reflux symptoms after taking your medication, try sitting up for 30 minutes to help your stomach digest the food.

If you are still having difficulty taking medication with food at bedtime, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
