PKR Bend

Hi, I'll be 6 weeks post partial knee replacement. Find that in last 10 days I can't improve my bend. Physio gets to about 108 degrees. Is this normal? Consultant did mention a manipulation to break the scar tissue. Should I exercise, rest, ice and elevate or push it as much as possible??

Only experience is with TKRs on the Forum for the past 4 years. For us, getting a 0 / +120 ROM usually takes 9-12 weeks...some people longer. It's very individual because no one can predict how much scar tissue your DNA will generate. So there is no "normal"...get all timetables out of your head and don't compare yourself to anyone else. You is you...period. You just have to do the work and be patient. Some of these can help...

The most horrible feeling is reaching a plateau. I got stuck at -4 for many weeks until I broke through it. This is not a LINEAR recovery...there is no getting better one day to the next as there are advances, setbacks and those dreaded plateaus. If you are already at 108 in 6 weeks, that's pretty good. I started at -14 / +84 and got to -1 / +123 in 12 weeks. On the bike, consider setting your seat so you are forced to do more of a bend...that could help. Time, work and patience. Give up the mind games...they only screw you up...

It takes time. Is your knee swollen? If it is it won't bend, much like a hosepipe full of water. It's a balancing act between exercising enough, but backing off if knee becomes painful. Ice and elevate still, icing for at least 40 minutes 4 times a day with toes higher than nose keeping a slight bend in knee.Keep doing the heel slides. Use your good leg to push the operated leg back until you feel discomfort, but not pain, and hold for 20 seconds. Your bend should increase with time, mine is increasing still and I'm at 11 months now. The exercise bike helped a lot and got me to 120 by 8 weeks. Personally I think it's much too soon to have MUA. I know of people who charted their ROM over a year.It was a slow increase, but they got there without any intervention. Good luck!
