Please advise on expected flow of Urine for Male.

Posted , 10 users are following.

I have been told I have BPH. I have tried Tamsulosin and Finasteride and both of these cause muscle problems. So I appear to be one of those rare people who suffer this type of side effect. I have problems with Statins as well so currently do not take any of these drugs (winging it!). Dr has given me Doxasosin but have not had the courage to take it so far.

Anyway, enough of background. What I am seeking is advice on flow. It takes me some 5 to 7 seconds to start my flow and it is hardly a running tap just a bit better than a dribble and I can eject with muscle squeezing the last drops.

Is that a good flow or should I assume it's going to stop soon leaving me in trouble?

Dr has hinted I could have an Operation but there is a 1 in 5 chance if some incontinence. has anyone experience of this Operation in the UK?

Any experience with Doxasosin appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Boring response I know, but you have to go and see a consultant Urologist. A proper diagnosis is absolutely essential. You need to know exactly what your symptoms are being caused by. Once you have that then the advice and the experiences of members on here start to become relevant. Until then we are all flying blind.

Avg flow is around 15ml /s, so for 300ml bladder should take around 20 seconds.

Ask your doctor about a diuretic. I have been on it for a few years and doing great. In the past many on this forum have disagreed although they never tried it,

When I tried diuretics for hypertension it gave me pelvic/prostate pain and did nothing for my flow.

Also my GP is reluctant to prescribe diuretics to patients with high PSA.

Prepare for a retention event. At some point, you will not be able to urinate. The pressure will build to excruciating pain. You will need to go to the ER, where they will insert a Foley catheter and after several hours, send you home with it. They will have you come back after two days to have it removed. You can avoid this nightmare if you ask your urologist to prescribe CIC (self catheterization). That will serve you well while you are considering options.

    Hello Happyhacker

Sorry that you are having a problem with the medication but you need to fine out what you have for sure but you also have to try different thing to see what will help you. Like Derek said you can try a diuretic that is up to you. If it helps good if not you can stop.

Doxasosin is okay but you have to watch out for your blood pressure it is one of the side effects. I have been on a pill for about a year. It is called Vasicare 10 mg. I have a tight external sphincter This is a muscle relaxer. It will help with the prostate and the bladder. Try this if you can get it..I have had no side effects.

It is really up to you. Before you go to bed take a hot shower that may help you relax and you may be able to go to the bathroom We have to go through a lot to see what will help us during the day.

Right now I don't think you need a operation. Medication will help you now you just have to weed the ones out that will not help you.

    Good Luck.......Ken

I was on doxazosin for about 5 years. At 2mg I had no side effects. When 2mg lost effectiveness I went to 4mg. Shortly thereafter I began to experience retrograde ejaculation. I didn't think it was any big deal but some are bothered by it. It helped somewhat with my BPH symptoms but I recently opted for a TURP and that helped a whole lot more. As others have said, if the doctor giving you this information is not a urologist, you need to see one.

My flow was down to 5ml/s so I had a urolift and now it is up to 10ml/s. You need to have a flow test done to measure it or estimate it yourself by volume/time.
