I have been having issues with my ears since the flu in Decemebr. I saw the ent a few times and noted mild etd and not to use motrin. I was getting tinnitus and weird ear sensitvity to sound. They blamed motrin use.
Dr. Wouldn't do a scan. Thru a series of drs was told tmj and ended up beginning acupuncture. Last saturday first time. Two days ago got sick sinus stuff and was immediately given augmentim and flonase by urgi center. So now on antibiotics since yesteday morning and started coughing from the sinus and now my ear hurts. Pierce pain. The coughing is destroying me.I do know theres fluid in the middle ear from the urgi care dr. Why didnt the antibiotic fix it? Now im scared. I dont understand what to do to help ease the pain and be sure its ok in there. I am using a heating pad. Im on the antibiotics and nasal spray..what now? Will i be ok? Does this resolve safely? This is very frustrating im 50 not suppose to happen. I cant even use morin for petes sake. I can take cortizone either due to eye issues. And the antibiotic has left me with headaches aside from the ear. But the ear is my main concern. This is sadly new to me.. Anyone have this or had this?

Hi Lisa, you poor thing and I know exactly what you're going through. 'Im glad you were prescribed Augmentin, that will protect you from any nasty bacterial infection spreading else where. Sadly, I was taken off this antibiotic, that's when mine turned into meningitis. The bacteria crossed the blood/brain barrier. Don't panic as this is very rare. I had terrible earache at the time, which I have never suffered in all the the years I have put up with ETD. I suffer, and have done for 30 yrs from Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. Not too sure if you've been reading my posts to other members on this forum. Such a pity you're unable to take steroids, as I've just recently finished a 20 days reducing course of Prenisolone, which has cleared my ears, sinuses and sinus headaches....taken all the inflammation away. Even regained my sense of smell that I lost years ago. Unfortunately, relief is short lived with suffering Allergic Rhinitis, polyps etc. But the relief for a few months (hopefully) I will enjoy !!
You may be one of the lucky ones and the antibiotics will do their job. In the meantime, put a towel over your head with boiling water in a basin and breth in for at least 20 minutes....then try popping your ears by squeezing both nostril together and blowing....works for me sometimes, just depends how clogged they are.
Good luck and try not to worry, you're not alone suffering fro this horrible condition.
Regards Anne

Hi Lisa, sorry you are suffering with this awful affliction also. I'll leave Anne to give most of the advice as she is the expert. I am starting heomeopathy and accupuncture on Monday because today I went for Reiki and when the practioner held her hands over my ears, they started to crackle, so I know there is something in it. Tomorrow I shall see my doctor AGAIN - they keep telling me there is nothing that can be done, but I have the internet - so I know there IS

The internet gives some prudent advice. They always say get a scan but yet i have had no scan. I think the internet has not met my insurance company. Or any at least not from the usa. As of january the dr told me they are very strict and difficult about it. So it's guesswork in a time it does not need to be. Which is sad. I started acuouncture two days before i got so sick. I go back saturday and i will ask what to do now. Haha on that but maybe they are wiser or kinder the my ENT. Acuounture has been used longer then any current treatments.

That's weird. I too tried accupuncture many, many years ago to help with my a sthma (which I add is completely controlled, but it wasn't the accupuncture that did it) after having one treatment I was really ill with bronchitis and I never went back for next appointment. I don't understand the US, you pay your insurance, so why the heck won't they pay out when you need it....no point in paying it ! Just go to your General Pactitioner and request a referral to an ENT consultant, only he or she will be able to help you with this problem.

Thank you for your kind words Alex. However, I'm no expert, wish I were. I just know from experience of many years suffering this awful condition that if I can help anyone I'm more than happy to do so....I'd hate anyone to suffer what I did in 1994, due to ETD.

I lived in USA for 25 years, so understand how it works. First you see the doctor ($20) co-pay then he is supposed to refer you to the ENT (another $40) copay. But it seems that is changing now. Same in UK though, I know there is a cure out there but the doctors telling me there isn't. Don't want to spend the money. After saying all this, the reiki really did something to my ear! I could actually live like this! I have another appointment booked for Sunday Good luck ladies.

Ah, so you are in the USA and have private health insurance, that is usually a very good thing, I don't understand why it isn't working for you. I am in UK and have to depend on the NHS, which these days is slightly better than nothing. When my doctor took me off Victoza for my diabetes and it got much worse - I just kept going to different doctors until they sent me to a specialist who didn't hesitate to put me back on it. Could you call one of those medical negligence lawyers, who don't charge an initial fee and see if they an advise you how to put the boot up the doctors' proverbial? xx

The medical profession blames insurancey companies. Insurance companies blame the doctors and the people. Drs over charge to survive and be aboe tomoay there liability insurance. It becomes bulk care. And those who need scans and more intense care some fall by the wayside. Which i think works statistically world wide. Its all just poor care overall. You have to pray you self heal and many times people do. I always did just the last few months have been awry. It stinks. Im more then sure they would allow there own ears to feel the way mine do. I think google should be banned. They keeo noting the proper way to get an examine and i havent recieve that lovely care. Insurance comoanies dont allow that stuff. They like to wait till the antibiotics destroy your body and such. Then act all dumb and stupid when all they needed to do was give a proper mri scan and see whats going on, not really rocket science at all. Very frustrating.
