I am 56 and I have a 10cm ovarian dermoid cyst. I have been told that it is unlikely to be cancerous, I have had blood tests. The consultant has told me that I need a full hysterectomy and have it removed. This has totally shocked me, i am in no pain from it, Im told they dont think it is cancerous, why a full hysterectomy? Im very worried.......

Hi Janeliza that happened to me but i had a 11cm cyst and i had a hysterectomy. They said i had a choice either take the cyst and ovarie out or a hysterectomy because they might have to go back in.So i decided to have a full hysterectomy because i am 49 and i wasnt having any children i have 2 children. So i had the op on the 12th Sep this year and they opened me and the 11cm cyst turned out to be the size of a yellow melon so i am glad i decided to have it.

    Hi Janeliza

I also have an ovarian cyst on my right ovary , it's 20.5 cm x 12 x 12 and I am booked in for a full hysterectomy on 1st Oct which is this wednesday for me . They told me I have to have a hysterectomy due to the fact that I have had cervical cancer in the past and that my blood level ca125 is high and I have tumor markers , which indicate cancer..Although they have told me it could be a borderline tumor , I won't know until it's out and tested .  The best thing would be to straight out ask them why you need to have a hysterectomy ? It could be a number of reasons, one being your age as they said with me , I'm 46 and have had two children etc. Do you have to have a pre op appointment ? If so ask them why when you go to that ? I am so scared about having to have my Op but I am trying to stay positive , and I hope you can too ,I also left a reply on your other post , best of luck to you xx

Kathy, sounds like we both had a hysterectomy on October , 2014. My doc used The Da Vinci robotic technique.  I retained one ovary and am mainly dealing with bladder pain and gas after attempting to sleep. How are you coming along?

You should ask why you need a full hysterectomy... It's your body after all and you who will have to recover from it... Is it worth another consultants opinion...? Plus discuss different options - laparoscopic, open or davinci (robot)... Be sure you're happy before you commit to surgery... A big operation to have. I had a fibroid removed open surgery and then 8 weeks later a full hysterectomy due to sarcoma of womb (open again)... So I'd go for the less invasive possible type of surgery... I hope it goes really well for you... But make sure you're 100% happy with everything before surgery.  It's your body after all and you that has to recover from it...

    Hi there

I had a full abdominal hysterectomy in March due to three massive cysts and the problems they were causing. I'm thinking they are just being safe, as they don't really know what damage a cyst has done until they are in there. One of mine had begun to twist my ovary which would have caused more problems. Plus in many cases if cysts are removed they just grow back and you have to have more surgery. If you are worried the best person to ask is your surgeon. It's the best thing I have ever done and I feel great but everyone is different. Good luck and let us know how you get on.
