Please Help!

My father just got his second hip replacement on Wednesday. It is not a revised it's a thr on his other hip. Since Friday his hip has been dislocated three times in the hospital. Everyone at the hospital and friends of hers are telling my mother that it is normal, but I am very concerned. My mother feels that if they leave it in God's hands everything will be ok, but I on the other hand want a second opinion and some answers. How common is it for your hip to dislocate that many times or at all right after a thr. His thr on his other hip never dislocated. Please help!

Thanks!

    Hello Katherine,

I'm so sorry to hear that your poor dad has to go through this complication on top of surgery.  First and foremost what does his surgeon have to say?  Is it something concrete or does he give you vague answers.

Second, what do they do to get it back into position.

I would not let them release your dad until this is resolved...you don't need to be at home worrying about this not to mention the pain it is causing your dad.

Stand firm and don't let the authorities bully you as you are entitled to some answers.  Patricia from Toronto Canada

Thank you so much for replying.

The surgeon just keeps saying that it's normal. Unfortunately, the surgeon that did his first thr retired before he decided to go ahead and get the second one done. They finally ordered some x-rays this morning and I'm waiting for my mother to call with the results.

Apparently they are pushing it back into the socket to get it to go back in. My poor Dad is in so much pain and so drugged up I just feel terrible.

When he is released he will be going to a rehabilitation center for a couple weeks.

It's just so frustrating because my mother is so cavalier with all of his health problems and I feel he doesn't get the proper care as a result.

I agree with you regurding your mother's attitude. Some people would rather live in denial because frankly, it is easier.  Don't let your dad down. pursue it completely.

Hello katherine, I would get some answers dislocations do happen I couldn't walk after my revision on operative left side for 6 weeks. Because they didn't want dislocation. They should but brace or try to put the hip back in to place.  Take care let us know what happens.  Jackie

Thank you so much for your input. I will be sure to talk to my father about all of this and try to push him to get more answers. It's just a very hard situation because I have no power in this matter. I will be sure to keep everyone updated.

You are right to be concerned because dislocation is not normal. The whole recovery process is governed by what are known as hip precautions in order to prevent dislocations. Your father would have substantial pain even without the dislocation but he ought to be having adequate pain relief. There is nothing wrong with you asking to speak to the surgeon or his registrar to express your concern and worries. If you don't feel happy doing that then contact PALS within the hospital. They are there to mediate and help.I'm not sure that they will be available at the weekend though. Don't be afraid because you are your father's advocate and it does not matter what other people think.. Do what you think is right.

Thank you so much for the advice Juliette!! The part that really angers me is that the dislocations occurred when they were switching him from bed to bed and everyone including my mother is so cavalier about this. They're saying that he may have to get a revision!

Oh boy he is suffering. What's causing the hip to go out? Is it physical therapy? Ps is something wrong  I support you wanting a second opinion.

It's not from PT. He just got it done Wednesday and was in ICU overnight because of low blood pressure. When he was moved to a regular room and they went to move him from one bed to another they dislocated it. Three times now same scenario! He now has a brace on, but my guts telling me that's not good enough!

I believe your gut is right. I don't believe it should go that in just s bed to bed transfer.sad

I think you are right. Trust your gut. This is what you have to do, "Dad I'm doing it!" then go ahead and do what needs to be done. I don't want to alarm you but as you read through these many many threads you will read very very little about people actually experiencng a dislocation. That righ there should tell you something.

That's exactly what I'm going to do. I'm going up to the hospital tonight when my Mom leaves to talk to him one on one.

I have read up so much on this in the last couple days and surgeons themselves are telling me this is not common.

I'm going to try to convince him to get a different surgeon on board because over my dead body will I let the same knucklehead open him back up!

    Hi

I'm sorry...your poor dad.....he must be in agony.

Dislocations do happen but is it normal to happen 3 times in a short space? I would say no definitely not.

    Your mam thinks it will be OK if left in God's hands....OK I'm a Christian but God works through surgeons {who dont seem to be doing a great job at the minute}

I know God is the Healer but like I say.....thats why there are surgeons/doctors/pharmicists and medice on this earth. Prayer mixed with medicines are good but not just to sit back and expect God to do it without any help from us.

    Sorry I'm preaching

Take care and let us know what happens

    Love

    Eileen
