You don't say how many mg you are on but I presume 25 or 50. The side effects from sert are very varied. Some people get none and some get them all. Cramps and diorrhea are common.

They will go. Drink plenty of water and try to eat

    Good luck

Hello, Claire!  My father was taking Sertraline and experienced extreme diarrhea as a side effect. He was taking a host of other medications so we had no idea what was causing the diarrhea.  He suffered from it for two months until someone on this website helped me understand that this is a real side effect of Sertraline in some people.  (Not even his doctors traced the diarrhea to this medication.)  From watching comments on this site, I've noticed that for some people, it goes away soon.  It did not for my dad.  He had to discontinue use of the medication.  So...you can relax!  You have a doctor's appointment today, so you can ask for guidance.  The only reason I continue to follow this website is to watch for people, like you, who are experiencing this side effect.  It's my opportunity to pay it forward.  Have a good day today!  I wish you the very best.

Hi Claire, the side effects you are talking about are very common on the start up of sertraline. In fact I’ve been on sert now for close to 8 weeks and I still have light bouts of diarrhea and some muscle cramps but nothing like I had when I first started. Hang in there it all gets better with time!

    Hi Claire,

Listen to yanna because if it wasn't for her old post about this side effect I would have worried myself sick! I had this terribly for 8 weeks and I also came off the sertaline altogether because of it . My doctor told me at first it couldn't possibly be the medication and ran some tests to which all came back completely normal! I took it upon myself to stop sertraline and within 6 days I was back to normal. There will be nothing else the matter don't you worry!

I took zoloft 4 or 5 years ago and remembered having trouble with my digestion and diharea a lot. It passed after a few weeks.

Last year, my doc tried again zoloft but upped my dose really fast to 100mg and had same trouble. She said zoloft is common for digestive problems. I asked her to stopped but now with my new doctor, we are giving it another try because I dont tolerate other ad very much. But this time, this doctor is making me start with low dose for lo ger time. I have diharea but not as severe and hopefully, it will subside like it did few years ago.

I had morning diorrhea really bad. It didnt get better till i reached 150mg ..I had to go for a colonoscopy which was clear.

I kept going with the sertraline because it got rid of my panic attacks and anxiety.

I think diorrhea can be triggered by anxiety ..I was suffering from it before I started on the sert.

Fingers crossed it seems to be subsiding now.

Sertraline can affect the gut with diarrhoea or constipation. Some people tolerate it better than others. I think your symptoms are most likely to be Sertraline. I had diarrhoea for six weeks. I ended up having a colonoscopy and endoscopy all clear. I have reduced Sertraline to 25mg and my diarrhoea is much less.

    Good luck

Do you think maybe I should decrease my amount until I get used to the drug I’ve been started off on 50mg xxx

You should definitely discuss that with your prescribing Doctor.
