Please help! Persistent dipstick hematuria

Hi

About a month ago, a random health check at work detected a slight trace of blood in my urine sample, by a dipstick. I went to my doctors a week later to check again and he found it. He ordered 5 different blood tests, sent my urine of to be checked and ordered an ultrasound. He said that if all was fine, then not to worry and its one of those things. All came back fine, even my urine was negative for blood which i did not understand. The doctor said that dipsticks are over sensitive and that the lab found nothing of any relevence. When i went back to a different doctor for scan resuts, which were clear, they did another dipstick which again showed traces of blood. Anyway, now i have been referred to a urologist and I don't know why. I am so worried that it might be cancer. But according the lab, i dont have microhematuria? I have no other symptoms at all.

Please help, Rebecca, 29.

Hi Rebecca I don't think you should worry too much over a little blood Everyone always jumps to conlussions about Cancer There can be a half dozen reasons for this from Stones in the bladder Diabetis Water Infection If you put "Blood in Urine" into Your Google box it will give you all the info I passed blood fo 2 or 3 times overnight and had a stone removed in Urology

As Sam says, can be many reasons, such as a cyst, not drinking enough fluids which causes the nephritis in the kidneys to suffer and result in blood, a small stone, a simple burst capillary from too much strain, infection, and more.

if you get referred to a urologist their first step is normally to have a look with a flexible cystoscope. Flexi scopes are nothing to worry about, I had one for the first time in march, I felt ridiculous over how much I worried over nothing, takes a few mins and barely feel a thing, it's more embarrassing than anything else, i'm a man and flexi scopes can be uncomfortable because they have to get past the prostate, but you don't have one and your urethra is only about 4-5cm as opposed to a man's 15-20cm.

I have my own write up on my flexi scope experience, you should be able to find it, it should help.

If I had to choose between the scope, and giving a blood sample / test, id choose the scope (excluding embarrassment)

Oh and the antibiotic tablet before the scope....swallow it as fast as you can, they taste revolting haha

Hi Rebecca. I know this post is ages old but I am in exactly the same position as you and just wondered what ever became of your situation? Dipstick hematuria is what I have, the lab reports came back normal no RBC etc found. My GP still calls it microscopic hematuria and has referred me for a cystoscopy. I have no symptoms, had frequency months ago but am sure it was due to the stress I was under at that time. I am annoyed that my DR never let me see the lab report on these two urine samples. Both say negative red blood cells. I have worried for months and only saw the reports when I asked reception to print them off as I am going to see a consultant privately this evening. I do not think I have any need for invasive testing based on these lab reports. How are you getting on?
