Please help - totally confused!

Hi Everyone,

Will keep this as brief as possible. I had the gastric bypass last year and have lost 12 stone. Also my Mum died who I was very close to (Mum was a very heavy drinker but it was pneumonia that ended her life.

Anyway I have been so depressed and have been drinking large amounts of wine – apx 3 bottles daily – this makes me self harm worse and I have serious suicidal thoughts and it scares the hell out of me.

I rang me doctor today and he sent me to an alcohol addiction centre. I was assessed and have a meeting next week with one of the counsellors and will get some medication – Librium I think.

I really really do not want to drink today but they said I have to – I was in a bit of a state today (sober but just upset) I am sure he said I should have 1 and a half to 2 bottles of wine daily until I see the counsellor. I am scared to death about the DTs – and equally scared about my self harming and suicidal thoughts. I could cope with having one bottle but more than that and that’s when I start to get out of control and drink to oblivion.

My last drink was about 10pm last night – I feel a bit jittery and clammy but I am not shaking. Do you think I should have just one bottle or 2 – I am scared if I only have one I will get the dts and I was told it can be fatal. Any advice would be so helpful.

    Hello Sara

Your doctor gave you the correct advice on how much you should drink until you see the counsellor.

I dont drink, my 37 year old son is an alcoholic.  He tried to detox on his own on at two occasions and suffered seizures; we had to call the ambulance and he was admitted in hospital.

He was told at the hospital that he must not stop drinking until he decides to get help or else he could suffer severe withdrawal symptoms and seizures as a result.

It is also true one can get the dts which my son experienced whilst he was being detoxed in hospital - it is actually quite horrible to see someone going through it.

So, please follow your doctor's advice until you see the counsellor.

      Thank you Sigatoka,

I just want to stop so much and this whole DT thing has scared me to death - Just having a glass now and I really dont want the wine - I feel better already Im not clammy, jittery and sweaty and more. I suppose the good thing is MENTALLY I dont want one but physically I need one right now.

If yo don't mind me asking did your son completely stop or did he have the seizures whilst cutting down>

      Hi there

My son has been in hospital on three occasions.  On the first occasion he asked to go because we believe he was trying to detox.

Second and the third time, he went cold turkey which is what caused the seizures; the third time he fell in his room and cut himself really badly - he fell forwards on to some furniture and needed 11 stitches.

As a result of these experiences, he is now too afraid to stop but refuses to get help.  He drinks whiskey which is causing him numerous problems now.

I am glad to hear that you actually want to stop and that is excellent.  So please follow the doctors advice.

    Hello Sara,

Taking 3 bottles of wine, some thing I have not heard so far. So heavy it is. Your entire Gastric system like Liver, intestines, stomach and digestive system got affected. So now what you need to do is simply stop taking alcohol which is going to be difficult. So follow cold turkey method. (iewink first three days take 1 bottle of wine, next 3 days take 3/4th, then 1/2, then 1/4 and completely stop. This method is proven. This has been widely tested for tobacco smoking. So I hope it will work for alcohol also.

      Hi,

I was drinking 3 bottles of wine and when I spoke to the project today - they said I should cut down to one and a half to two bottles until I see the counsellor next week - I feel this is too much but they said only having one bottle could be too much of a cut down and could cause dts - which has scared me to death - I really dont want to have a drink at all but they have told me this could be fatal??I really am confused now!

      Thanks for your reply xxxxxxx

    Hi Bardo,

I drank heavly for a long time, and when i lost a very close friend to Cancer very young i drank more. I now have an enlarged liver so i just stopped. I did cold turkey and i only experienced night sweats for 1 night. No shakes and all the pain went away, i lost a stone in weight too. It is dangerous to just stop, but everyone is different. My trouble was that i didn't want to stop, i had to!! so i still find it really hard to accept. I have slipped a few times but the pain just comes back so i know i have to do it properly for sure. I would think 1 bottle would be ok, my doctor told me to cut down over 3 days. You don't sound as heavier drinker as i was or for as long so you may not get any symptoms apart from normal detox sweats.

When our loved ones die we all feel depressed, but once u start drinking it becomes hard for u to come out of the depression and anxiety, bcoz what alcohol does is block the production of endorphins the chemical that produces the feel good feeling, or happy feeling, hence after a drink the next morning u feel guilty and anxious, and till u drink again it does not go away so it ends up been a visious cycle, try to ask for some antidepressants , from yo doctor while u are still cutting down, if u feel suicidal call a ambulance and u will jump the cure, hope it helps.

No. Don't have one. You are not dependent enough to get weaned off. If you are in thre right frame of mind to stop, and it sounds like you are, then you don't need alcohol. It will make it worse in the long run if you are continuing to drink. Stop whilst you have the willpower. I drank 4-5 bottles of wine a day for 5 years and I went cold turkey. It was he'll but if you're not at the stage where you are wetting yourself, sh*tting yourself or can't walk then you don't need to wean off.
