Please help with UTI medicines

Posted , 10 users are following.

I have a recurring UTI now for 5-6 months. I'm allergic to penicillin and sulfa so that only leaves Cipro & Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin).

The urine was clear but the culture came back with an infection and said that only penicillins & sulfas & Macrobid will work.

I'm currently on Macrobid, day 4 out of 7, and I'm feeling worse than I did when I started taking it. I called my urologists office and they said there was nothing they could do and that I had to finish the antibiotic.

Please, does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Why isn't the medicine working when the culture tested sensitive to it? Im so fearful this is going to turn into a kidney infection.

Incase anyone in the future stumbles upon this, your best bet is to see a urologist. I had the cystoscopy (along with CT & etc.) and it was all normal. Basically my weight is causing these issues. I am to take 1 Macrobid nightly for 3 months to see if it helps.

I have heard that this can work, however just be careful with the Macrobid, taking it long term can cause issues down the road....I have heard once people stop taking it, their symtoms return, so this may be a long commitment on an antibiotic....make sure you take a daily probiotic too, you need to keep the good bacteria around to fight off further infections.

I think that's the risk you take with any medicine long term, especially antibiotics.

But thank you! Yes I am definitely going to!

Any explanation to why the weight is hindering your healing? I am obese and have been dealing with a bad uti that won't clear up and have had many tests but nothing seems to help. I am currently taking Cipro but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I am guessing here, but is it possible being over weight puts pressure on the bladder and making it harder to eliminate urine completely, causing bacteria to stay inside?  I just wonder because they say UTI's are common in pregnancy and that is when there is pressure on the bladder.....Also if there is pressure on the bladder, this too could cause the bladder to feel full and have to go more frequent.

I have no idea honestly lol if I remember correctly, I think the doc said it pushes the urethra out more making it more available to bacteria.

I was in a sort of daze after the cystoscopy because he was having a hard time doing it and I was in pain from that, ugh.

Yeah I finished my Macrobid Monday and it's back already. My new culture came back contaminated so I'm prob gonna have to do another. I could've cried. I'm so sick of being in pain from this and worrying it's going to spread.

Cipro worked best for me but it kept coming back. Now this Macrobid feels like it's barely even helping.

Unfortunately the more I have read about UTI's I am reading that more and more bacteria are becoming resistant sad, I am not sure what happens when that happens.  I truly feel for you, I feel I am in a similiar situation, that is why I have to rely on alternative, since mine is strep b, I have been taking Allicin which is a strong form pf garlic, and vaginal probiotics which combat yeast and infections.....last month I did ozone, I find I get a month or less of relief then a flare up especially when I am under stress, it seems this whole situation has made my levels more stressful.  Urologist doesn't seem concerned in the least, gynocologist thinks it is my bladder spazing out from hormones (perimenopause) it seems to be a constant guessing game, and all I know is I embrace the good days.

Bless you. I really hope they can find something to help you. I'm currently on Cipro now but all of my cultures have been negative. I've been sent to a specialist and they didn't do anything for me other than ask me if I was worried about the future and send me on my way.

Yeah I've read the same. Makes me really nervous because I fear that's what's happening with me. I don't know what they'll do for me if its antibiotic resistant.

I don't even know how this has happened to me. It just happened out of nowhere one day this summer and just won't officially go away other than for a few weeks at a time. The doc said it just happens to some unlucky people.

I hope you can get yours figured out as well I know how frustrating it can be sad

      Hi Linda,

I have to tell you that I have the same problem, but I self catheterise so it's a lot more difficult. I'm allergic to nearly all antibiotics now. Such a nightmare!! I've finally resorted to paying privately at Harley Street. I am currently seeing a professor there who is quite amazing. If you or anyone else wants more info, please message me privately.

      Take care,

      Sam
