Please I need some reassurance

Hello everyone. I need some reassurance. I’ve been on Zoloft for about a month and a few days now. I have been needing to take a Xanax in the morning as I wake up about 5:30 am with anxiety. I also need to take one before bed. Each day I hope and pray I will feel better. I have noticed slight improvements but nothing major. I also sometimes get this odd sensation/pain on the left side of my head which causes me to have anxiety. I think the worse. I am a mom and wife and I have not felt like myself in a long time. I don’t know how much longer I can take this. I feel like the meds aren’t working or maybe I’m not being patient. Any words of encouragement would be so helpful! Thank you all.

    Hello Jenna,

Just want to say it will get easier, time and patience is all you need to get threw with these types of meds. 4-6wks on the same therapeutic dosage should see your system start to settle down.

That fact that your already starting to see glimpses of improvements shows this med is already starting to work. It really is a slow gradual effect with Sertraline.

And dont worry about the odd sensation pain on the left side, I also had this when starting out... just behind my ear like a sharp stabbing sensation. It will pass once you become more settled.

What dose are you on? Maybe they need to up it? I have been on sertraline for 3 months now, and have increased from 25-100mg. I am also a mom and wife with 3 kids 😣. My sister was put on sertraline around the same time i was. We both experienced fatigue and pain like someone is squeezing your head in the beginning. I found that it only happens sometimes now and i can usually make it go away.

It’s such a scary feeling . I am on 50 mg. K woke up last night in such a panic and ended up vomiting. Now today I have such bad anxiety. It’s awful. I feel so helpless and just want to feel better.

    Hi Jenna

It took me around 3 months to fully feel like the tablets were doing something. It is frustrating and difficult to be patient when you feel anxious but I too woke up in the nights in a panic attack and every morning crying and I have now fully recovered. You will get there. Good luck xx

Hello Jenna and sympathies, I have been on Sertraline for 7 weeks and two days and saw your post just as I returned from a review with my GP.

I had some concerns that I wanted to bring up with her and have been reading these forums to check I am on course - I find them a great help.

I don't have health anxiety, my depression and anxiety are caused by other things. But briefly, I've been on  50 mg as a starter dose, today increased to 75mg. When I started taking the meds I had a variety of side effects for about two weeks: nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, waking at 4am, one or two up days, several more depressed days. In the  third week my anxiety increased, occasional music in my ears (weird I know, but apparently it's a form of tinnitus), and occasional jaw clenching.

Anyway, these are all normal side effects and they do go away. I only have some tiredness and lethargy now (hence the increase in dose), with occasional bursts of anxiety. My depression is buffered by about 20% so I know the meds are beginning to work, despite the difficulties of the side effects. Maybe the pain in your head is caused by tension caused by anxiety?

When I saw my GP she said that Sertraline is known to be a slow acting  drug, that cheered me. She is cautious about quick and large increases in dosage because of the side effects. She said, what a lot of people here say, that it's a case of little by little to find the optimum dose.

So take heart, you are not alone although I know it's hard when you are taking a drug to make you feel better and the side effects make you feel ill, with little immediate benefit. Hope this helps!

Hi Jenna, I’m sorry your feeling rough. I’m right there with you though. I’m only three weeks on sertraline and trying to hold on to hope.  I think that the sertraline has actually increased my anxiety.  I’ve read here that these side effect pass with time. Let’s try to hang in there and give it time.  I’m also in the US.

      Hi Paula

What dose are you on? Do you wake up several times in the middle of the night with anxiety? I feel like I can’t even go to work some days it gets so bad. Where in the US are you?

I'm on 4 weeks of 200mg and going through the same. Was taking .5 of xanax and sometimes .25 at night to sleep for about a month but was nervous about addiction. I got a cold last weekend and ended up taking tylenol PM at night which helped a lot. But last night i only took melatonin 3mg and it barely worked. Kept waking up every two hours.

i miss sleep and feeling like myself! keeping my fingers and toes crossed that we all heal very soon!

I'm also in the US--in NYC, where in US are you guys?

I am in California and I am going through exactly what you are. I don’t sleep, hardly eat and I’m constantly anxious. I also wake up every 2 hours with heart racing and anxiety. I’m hoping we all get there soon! I also have to take Xanax to deal with the anxiety until the meds kick in. It just seems like it’s taking forever.

I know! But I've been doing a lot of reading bc I'm afraid that its not working bc it has pooped out, but it seems that only 25% of patients encounter that and its when they are in maintenance mode and it just stopped working, not because they had been on it once before or because they lowered the dose. So if its worked before for us, it should work again! gotta stay positive and hopeful! its hard though with how we feel...just need more encouraging info and stories to help me believe it!

I agree.  It worked for me before so I have hope it will work for me again. I had tot ale some time off work because I was not able to perform the way I wanted to as my anxiety and ocd thoughts got in the way. I couldn’t get out of bed. It’s gotten a little better and I know that Zoloft is a slow improvement and not an overnight fix. Hoping we both get to where we need to be sooner than later!

Give it longer than a month. For me it was a very gradual improvement. I did not feel different, but I was no longer as miserable. One day I woke up and noticed that I hadn't been feeling nearly as bad. I felt more normal. Give it at least two months. Also, I hope you feel better. One thing anxiety has done to me is make me more empathic and sympathetic than ever. Almost too much. Sometimes I feel so bad for other's situations that it destroys my own happiness. Good luck.

Yes! I’ve been through this before and was on Zoloft and it worked wonders for me. I do see slight changes but you’re right it’s definitely slow process. I also have so much sympathy for others because I know the struggle and it’s not easy at all. Thank you for your kind words  smile
