My 11 year old son has recently started complaining of what started as dizzy, weird, a dream like feeling...as it started happening more often his descriptions became more intense (like he's in a dream, nothing feels real, everything freezes)...it started every now and then and was usually short 10-20 mins followed by a nap...it became more frequent, daily and then multiple times a day...it happens everywhere and in beween "episodes" he is exhausted, anxious and depressed (mostly about it happening again), and none of those symptoms were present before the derealization...he is to the point that he just stays home (no shool, no interactions outside of the house) , he complains about a constant brain fog that he cant shake, lays around with his eyes closed because of that "foggy" feeling, sleeps mostly and has "episodes" on and off all day...went to the ER, they said its panic attacks and go see my pediatrician...my ped said she doesnt handle...took him to my dr.she prescribed paxil, a very low does which he tried for only two days and symptoms became worse...yelling, hallucinating, says he wants to die (this was the worst "episode" ever) Dr said stop meds, go see psychiatrist... she also told me hes hypoglycemic (which probably makes it worse but isnt causing it?) i made an apt. with a neuro dr. but cant get in for over a month (wanted to make sure it wasnt seizures?) he is miserable and exhausted and wants to know when he will be normal again... any suggestions please my poor boy is suffering

    The condition is quite common, It will feel He is far away and voices will sound far away. i Went through something same when I was in my teens. It seemed to clear when older although I would recommend an appointment with a Neuro to make sure all is ok. It is important you follow through to make sure He is ok.

    The medication that was given will take longer than a few days to work, take them for the full period given to you then discuss again with your GP. You son will have some side affects until He gets used to them.

    Have you discussed a Neuro with your GP ? it may be He could arrange an appointment with a different Specialist as I feel you are not in the UK for some reason ??

      Hi... thanks for responding ... I do have an apt. with Neuro, but they cannot see me until May 10th... my Dr. is trying to get me in sooner... she suggested I stop meds since symptoms became much worse... and now I'm afraid to try anything of fear that will happen again... I have read so many forums and many people say the meds made it worse or didn't help at all... since he's 11 it's so hard because kids do not respond like adults with the antidepressants ...

      Did you only experience this at one time in your life? Or did it happen more than once? How long did it last?

      I have a psych apt. Next week..

      Thanks for responding and yes I'm not in UK... US! (;
