Please tell me this is normal!

Hi there, I'm hoping someone can tell me this is ok before I go completely looney with worry! I have reflux and a hiatus hernia ( small one) and I've been on ppis and domperidone for some time now. Starting around June 1st, my reflux started coming back. I have lpr and my throat started burning as did my mouth. I managed to settle this with loads of Gaviscon Advance, but it's starting to come back again.

The thing that's scaring me is the pain in my chest. Sometimes stabbing, much of the time feeling bruised. It's always there. It's mostly on the left, the stabbing/ shooting pain below my left breast. I also get sharp pains in the centre and to the right.

Anyone else have this whilst on ppis? It's depressing me so much. I have a gp appointment Thursday and want to know if it's something I have to be firm about with her as I'm fed up of being told that I'm either

A) imagining it. Or

B) it's functional  ( same thing)

I'm hoping someone can relate as it will make me feel less like it's something awful. Thanks.

Hi Eddie, I read your post some time ago when this all started. It really helped. Can I just confirm that you still got the pains even when you were on the ppis?

      Thanks x

    Stella

I have almost daily pain in my chest in that exact same place you mention

according to my GI Dr it is because of pressure on your. Vagus nerve

rather this is true I can only assume so I also. Have Gerds and a small HH

included is Barrett's non cancerous I have had the upper scope to confirm all this several years agos so please don't panic I have been dealing with this for some years

although when it's at its worst it came really consume your thoughts. Strange enough I have a checkup with my GI Dr this Thursday also so good luck but if your GI dr is like mine he will just say take pain meds or get the surgery fundi which he says is less than perfect result and advises it as a very last result I have also added a pain since I'm a male right below my left nipple under my rib although it is not stabbing more of a dull ache my GP suggest it might be IBS after some X-rays he took but suggest I speak to him about it IE the Thursday app good luck

I have Barretts too. I'm seriously considering the fundi and have a ph test booked for August 14. So good to hear you get this pain ( obvs not good for you :-/) interesting about the vagus nerve.

My GI doc sounds the same as yours - apparently my Barretts is too insignificant to monitor ( not to me it's not!) x

Eddie, I can't tell you how many times this has had me in years and I suffer from a chronic pain syndrome that I refuse to take meds for!

I wish these docs had to live with this for a week. They'd soon have some answers! X

It is scientists and pharmacists whe come up with the answers. Doctors just work out which medicine to give for which thing and often get that wrong. I have had times my doctor gave me something, then I got a new "symptom" which they failed to spot was obviously a side effect of the thing they had given me a week before. They they start to go off down another track saying it must be this or that and to give you a medicine for this non existent illness which is just a side effect of the medicine for the actual thing. You have to learn about your illnesses and medications and all of their side effects, do not assume they know it all.

I would tell the doctor about the pains as they might be a side effect but they need to work out if it is or not.

How much PP I are you on Stella I am on 20mg of omeprazole twice a day

and I add Zantac and other things as needed my GI Dr says it's ok to take them both his quote was what ever it takes to keep the burn down but nothing takes aways the pain after eating or up to 2 hrs after eating plus the often food popping up hrs after eating them

Hi Stella, I have all that you described and yes Im on prilosec twice a day and zantac twice a day plus now on 'Bentyl' (Dicyclomine) for the pain when needed. I am tot ake those 3 times a day on my 'bad days' with pain. It does take the pain away and after a few doses the doziness feeling will go away that you get from when you take it for the first time. I am now feeling 90% better, I only have to take a Bentyl maybe once a week now. I also am extremely careful with what I eat. I know my triggers and stay away from all of them, even on my good days I wont chance it and try to eat something that I know is a trigger for me. I also am only eating 'fat free' foods. I found that lowfat foods caused me pains too. Anyway hope I have helped some and by the way I was told the pain is from the acid reflux that leaks up into the esophagus and causes irritation in the esophagus. For me, I do believe this is a fact.

From all I've read all over the net including this site too, no none of us are  alone in this battle. Just ask the doc about the Bentyl or maybe he/she knows of another antispasm med simuliar to Bentyl. It has been a God send for me on my 'bad days'. Please keep me informed on how you are doing and how your next appt goes.
