Pleurisy and Chest Infection Clarithromycin

I really hope someone can give me some advice. Before Christmas I came down with a cold which turned into a chest infection. I didnt go to a GP as usually these things clear up. However by Christmas Eve I was starting to feel pretty bad and called the doctor but they were closed so I didn't go. Went on the 27th and was diagonosed with a chest infection and given Amoxicillin. I finished taking these but still felt bad and started to develop a pain under my right breast, almost like a pulled muscle or bruising of the ribs... I asked a doctor and he checked my pulse to rule out a pulmonary embolism???? and said you have pulled a muscle from coughing.... With that I left and carried on taking Ibuprofen which helped ease the pain. The Monday I had a strange incident where my heart was beating really fast and irregular and I felt sweaty, dizzy and couldnt stop shaking. I went home from work and thought about going to the doctors. Plus the pain in my right side was getting worse. I went back to the gp who said I was probably suffering with Pleuritic pain from the infection and he described me more antibiotics.. Amoxiclav...
I still felt bad and he asked me to go back the following Friday to check my blood pressure as it was slightly high.
Finished the Amoxiclav and suddenly felt bad again... nothing I have ever expereienced. Chest Pain, really bad cough, weak sweaty, extremely exhausted...no sense of smell, taste etc... so tired.
I went back again to the gp and broke down in tears as now the middle of January and things seem to be getting worse. He took blood and sent me to the hospital for a chest xray and the blood test he states shows an infection but no blood clot on the lung. The chest xray has also returned clear??? I rarely go the the doctors but he almost made me feel like a hyperchondriac...
He prescribed me more antibiotics but this time Clarithromycin 500mg twice per day.
I was hoping these would have kicked in by now but still feeling terrible and am taking these alongdside extra strength Ibuprofen and paracetamol for the pain in my chest.
I am starting to wonder if I will ever get better. I feel so low and down, I havent left the house for days and just want to sleep as I am feeling so exhausted.
Has anyone suffered from anything similar or know how long it takes to get over this... Its been over a month now and I just cant remember what it feels like to feel normal...
Sorry for the long post...

Had bloods done in A and E was fine, but I 've felt knackered, I 've had the range of it, sweats early on, vomiting and generally feeling crap, had amoxcilin which helped but throat came back soon as finished the n put onto another penc'an which nearly cleared it up but then with in 2 1/2days it was awful inside my throat white areas bigger than spots, very red too.
Dr. gave me another antibiotics Doxycycline day 2 better throat but still inflamed. How can I be sure it 'll clear it as it hasn't before... scared hope it all passes soon. Good luck all.

You can't do much for Pleurisy. Just lots if rest and fluids.
I know how awful it is. Most unpleasant. You ought to get a proper diagnosis though.
Hope you feel better soon.

I have read some of the posts and would like some of your advice. I started off early to middle of January with a cough and a pain developed in left side of chest over a few days it got progressivley worse spreading around my ribcage into my back and until one night it became excruciating with severe stabbing pains in front of my chest every time i coughed or breathed in too deep so much so that i ended up ringing nhs helpline, they asked for my symptoms and decided to send an ambulance round, i was put on the back of ambulance and wired up to check for heart problems blood pressure etc but all was hunky dorey but they suggested i go to docs following day, couple of days went by and i decided to go just in case but pain seemed to be easing, explained everything to doc and he said i had had an infection inside my ribcage but as the symptoms were now easing i would be fine within a couple of days so no antibiotics needed i agreed with what he said as it made sense, a few days passed and i started to feel a little stronger, my cough started to break up and was coughing lots of phlegm up and i thought great its finally going, but now the pain has come back nowhere near as severe though but now it feels inside my ribcage on the left had side??? i feel tired as though no energy and cant be bothered, has anyone else experienced these types of symptoms for soo long and when will it leave me alone??

He started getting pains in his chest which turned out to be his lungs. He went to the chemist and was prescribed amoxicillin. 5 days later, he went back and was given another 5 day course, along with cough medicine, a ventolin and some steroids.
After this course, he was even worse with chest pains and pain under his ribs on the right hand side. He went to the local hospital and was seen by a chest specialist. She said his chest X-Ray was clear but gave him 7 new medications to take, diagnosing a possible bout of bronchitis as well as the GERD. These included more penicillin, steroids, salbutamol, cough syrup etc.
This didn't even touch the symptoms. He went back again 2 weeks ago, and this time his lungs were filled with mucus. Another course of antibiotics, several other medications, one intramuscular injection, two intravenous penicillin later, still no improvement.
He's now got an appointment with ENT for Tuesday next week. He's absolutely drained, depressed, weak, confused and unable to sleep. He coughs every time he tries to speak. We haven't had a conversation since new year. He can't lie down, his throat still burns with the acid reflux, and he's sure he's going to have a heart attack with all the coughing. There's been no improvement now since the start, over 10 weeks ago.
His breathing is laboured and he's having a lot of trouble swallowing food too.
I just hope we get somewhere soon.

They started me on Augmenton, which is the same class of antibiotics as Amoxicillin, which cleares up most of the common bacteria, not my case apparently... Clarithromycin is for micobacteria that lacks cell wall. So it will do nothing to your common bacteria, but suppose to clear up this prokaryotic one. I don't have a confirmation from the doc yet. I'm day 4 on Clarithromycin and not feeling that much better. Been dealing with it over 3 weeks now and have a 5 month old to take care of...thanks for the reply

Must say I have never smoked, but I'm obese and have Narcolepsy with catapalxy not that I think this is connected. I am 38 married with kids and work full time. Never had problems with chest before, was used to getting sore throat ears or glands when younger but never had anything that has gone on this long.

Hi Nicola,
I was trying to see if you ever cleared your chest infection. I'm having same symptoms, finished Amoxicillin, and on Clarithromycin, now, not feeling better, was trying to check what your treatment plan was. Thank you

I too have had this 'superbug' .. And I think that's what it is! Started on Xmas day feeling flu like so suddenly,In fact my son-in-law started with it exactly the same time, we both said we felt cold and shivery and would my daughter close the windows please(she was doing Xmas lunch). Turned out his went within a week...mine took 10 weeks!
I've had 6 lots of various antibiotics and a course of steroids and so much time off work, I kept going back to work but actually got sent home! Coughing, not sleeping, no smell, taste or hearing for weeks and my face hurt and swollen with sinus infection.
I'm just feeling better but still very tired which is most unlike me!
I have to say I've NEVER had anything like this and I'm almost certain it was pneumonia at one point, it's also very depressing when you don't feel like you're improving.
I haven't had antibiotics for years until this and I'm hoping not to get anything like it again!
For all of you still suffering .. It will go eventually just be easy on yourselves and sleep when you can and try and eat well.
My fingers are crossed for you
