pleurisy pains

I have just found these posts and i feel so relieved reading them as was starting to think it was just me or i was making i up.

Ihad been feeling a bit tried for a week and had to go home from work last thurs as had really bad headache,(something i don't really get)

last friday i was out of breath going up the stairs so went to the doctors (i've had pnemonia before so was worried it was back)i had a temp of 38 and was told it wa a viral infection,i was told to take paracetomol and ibuprofen and if not better to go back on Monday.Come monday the breathing was better but i was getting a stabbing pain in my chest which was shooting up my left shoulder and down my arm. i thought something was wrong with my heart.I saw the doctor in the morning he asked what i was doing when i left the doctors and i said i wa going to work, he just started laughing and said you're not you have pleurisy, you have to rest for at least a week.He gave me a prescription for codeine for the pain and said if it got worse go back asap.

Monday night i though i was having a heart attack and tues wasnt any better.wednesday i started to feel very sick aswell so called the docs, they told me to go there asap so i did and was sent for blood tests and also told the sickness was due to the codeine.I was given Naprosyn for the pain and told to go back again on friday if i wasnt better.today is Thursday and im no better so looks like im going back tomo.

I tried to fold a small amount of washing this moring and had to stop as it hurt too much,i'm so fed up now as want to go back to work and get better. i feel that i can't take anymore time off work as i dont feel they give much sympathy. but i can hardly move without feeling like i'm having a heart attack.I'm only 25 and fit and healthy normally i can't understand why i get all the illnesses that older people are meant to get.

I'm so glad there are other people feeling the same and to know that this pain is normal for pleurisy.

I hope your are all feeling better

So today is monday and i'm off work for another week.pain has eased a bit but is now a constant dull ache,i feel like ive had an op or something, like ive been dug around inside my chest area, every so often or if i move a lot i get the stabbing pain.Have been told that i can't really afford to get a chest infection as my lungs arent expanding enough and they prob couldnt cope with another virus meaning possibly hospital, today however i feel like ive got a cold and a bit of a cough. If i had an office job and didnt move very much i would have tried going back today but as i'm a florist my job involves a lot of moving so im staying at home.Im sorry to hear others are in pain and have similar problems but it is reasuring to think i'm not alone.

I hope you continue to get better Sue i have been told it can take time as the damage the virus causes has to be repaired.

Hi - you're not the only young person with it, my 16 year old daughter had it last year. I always thought it was an old-person thing, too. She was getting shooting pains in her chest and under her ribs, and at first thought it was a reaction to the contraceptive pill she had started to take. She went to the doc who sent her straight for a chest xray etc, because he thought she may have a blood clot on her lung (scary) but they said she'd got pleurisy. There was no treatment, antibiotics or anything, just paracetamol. A hot water bottle, electric blanket, and a hot wheat bag helped a bit, but she was frightened by the pain, which continued for almost 3 weeks, then suddenly went overnight, and hasn't come back since.

I wish you both well, and hope you feel better soon. :D

    Hi there,

I know your pain. 3 weeks ago I started with a sore throat and thought a cold was on the way. 2 or 3 days later started with a very bad cough which got so bad I couldn't work - lost my voice and I am a telephonist. Throat like razor blades on swallowing. Went to the Drs said I had laranghitis. I was off work for a week. Went back to work not feeling great, cough still bad. On Thurs went to Nurse as throat still killing me. Had anaesthetic pastilles prescribed which made me vomit!! On the Saturday phoned NHS Direct as I had severe pain in my side - said they couldn't help me!! On Tuesday went back to nurse as still feeling rotten - said I could be asthmatic as I had had problems before. Gave me an inhaler which seemed to help a lot and made appointment for Asthma Clinic for next Monday. Yesterday (Friday) went to work and was doing ok. Then I started to suddenly find breathing difficult and experienced excruciating pain in the left side ribs. Phoned my husband to fetch me and he took me straight to A & E. Had chest Xrays and ECG. Told I had pleurisy and needed to rest. Gave me very strong painkillers which left me feeling drunk and nauseus. So I feel very sorry for like suffering people and wish everyone who is unwell a very speedy recovery. Take care.
