PMR and gumboils

I've been on predisnolone since September this year, currently trying to taper from 10-9mg very slowly, following Eileen's summary. I've been having regular gumboils since being on the steroids, taken antibiotics in case it was an infection, to no avail -- anyone else have experience of this as a side effect of the drugs, and what remedies might you recommend? thank you, and a peaceful Christmas x

Hi patsy59716
Gumboils are inflammation in the gums so preds would relieve the inflammation. Try swilling your mouth with warm salt water and go see your dentist incase it is a dental problem.....

The main cause of a gumboil is a bacterial infection - and if your immune system is not working at its best it may not get rid of the infection properly. One easy home remedy which may help - and one used by oral health specialists - is a salt mouthwash:
"Use a salt mouthwash. This will help reduce swelling and dry up or draw out any infection that might be present in the gum boil. Fill half a tumbler or glass with lukewarm water and add half a teaspoon of standard table salt. Mix until the salt is dissolved. It doesn't matter if some remains in the bottom of the glass. Use the saltwater as you would your usual mouthwash, but be careful to keep a special emphasis on the infected site when you're rinsing. Do not swallow the saltwater.[4]
Continue washing with the salt washes once or twice a day for a week to help heal the boil. This will reduce chances of it coming back. At the same time, be sure to maintain a good dental hygiene routine.
This method is recommended by oral health professionals and is clinically proven to be effective, but is not a replacement for a visit to your dentist."
After a gumboil or other mouth infection you need to change your toothbrush - any bacteria can survive on the old toothbrush and are reintroduced when you brush.

Thank you for your responses, I did a google search which came up with several references to the use of prednisone and oral health: 'Can lead to the loss of bone which supports your teeth, symptoms include painful, swollen gums or jaw, loose teeth, jaw numbness, a heavy feeling in the jaw, fluid in the gums and jaw, and exposed bone.' So it may be a possibility? I'm happy to say that I have been using the salt mouthwash, and the symptoms have decreased, so I'm really looking forward to that roast turkey later today, and a visit to the dentist in the new year! Thanks again for your words of advice....
