PMR and high blood sugar

Hi, I rang gp for blood results and was told that that there is a letter posted out to make appt.  to see dr. my blood sugar is high but nothing to worry about.

Diabetes  (sp) does not run in my family and I remember reading that either PMR or steroids can sometimes cause high blood sugar.  Has this happened to anyone else.  All information welcome and thank you in advance.

Yes pred does do that to some of us, so cut the carbs out as much as possible and I really mean that. It helps to get your blood sugar under

So no veggies that grow underground, those that grow on top, chicken, fish, meat etc.  Check out the Diabetic site and read up on it all.

Thank you lodger for giving me the heads up.  Will check the Diabetic site.

Pred changes the way your body processes carbs and in some people that can lead to higher blood sugar levels - not diabetes but what is called pre-diabetes. Cutting the amount of carb you eat helps and also helps avoid the pred-induced weight gain

It is the Hba1c level that is important - the blood sugar level at any one point is a less good way of diagnosing problems.

Thanks Eileen, I got a letter today to make an non-urgent appt. to see gp. I got appt. for 24th August.  Yes I remember a post where you said that your body proccesses carbs differently due to pred.  I have put about a stone on and cannot wait to get it off, it's a slow process but I'm in it for the long haul.  Anyway I hope to get the sugar levels evened out in the meantime.  Sometimes, I will have a party in my mouth with chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate but as I have said not that often.  Oh dear the trials and tribulations of PMR and pred.  Not complaining, I am alive and breathing and grateful.

Make the chocolate, at least 70% cocoa solids, it takes a bit of time to get used to it - but you will find two small squares are enough.  Whereas with ordinary chocolate you go on eating it.

Thanks lodger but I am an all or nothing person.  Two squares of chocolate even with 70% cocoa solids would not be enough or it would play on my mind that there are other squares lurking about.  If I don't buy it then I cannot eat it.  That works better for me.

I eat high cocoa solids chocolate too - more than 2 squares would make most people feel sick so it works as aversion therapy too!
