PMR and Ibufrofen

Hi,

I am 47 years old male and recently diagnosed with PMR. I have been taking Pednislone 30mg for a couple of weeks but it only takes away a certain amount of the pain. I have to take at least 2 Ibufrofen tablets 400mg a day with some cocodamol tablets. Is this normal a the steroids don't seem to have the effect that it does with everybody else (tkae pain away in a couple of days).

IanC--good mroning--I can only tell you my experience and what i have gathered from others, including the medical profession. I was diagnosed with PMR in May last year and put on 15 mg of Pednislone. The pain relief was immediate and within 36 hours I was much better, although still tired and fragile. Since then, I have gradually reduced to 7.5 and am back walking, playing golf and swimming. I have bad patches and you can feel the problems lurking inside you---or else I have an over-active imagination.I was also given a cocktail of drugs to combat potential side-effects of the steroids, but have not been advised to use other forms of pain relief. Certainly from what I have been told, if it is PMR it should react to Pednislone (or the dose is not high enough, but again 30 seems like a highish starting dose from others experience). I would clearly talk with the medics about why it is not working..let me know if there is anything else I can swap notes on, as men with PMR are much less common than females. DavidM

I tend to jump into this forum when I don't feel comfortable with the diagnosis and treatment. If 30 mg Prednisolone is not giving you a substantial reduction in pain you need to report back to your doctor. The Prednisolone is an irritant to your stomach; the Ibuprofin is an added irritant and a stomach ulcer can result.

How was your PMR diagnosed? Did you have blood tests? What was your ESR? Are you having follow up tests? Please, get on to your doctor and be firm. And good luck!

    Hi

I started on 40mg - that cleared the pain completely. 3 days on 40mg and I came down to 20mg - the pain was back full force in 24hrs. My GP put me back to 40mg immediately, and then dropping by 5mg intervals every 5 days until I got to 20mg. After that the tapering went much more slowly and after 2 years I am now on 2mg.

I think people react differently - I'm overweight so probably needed more at the beginning. My GP said I needed the high dose at the beginning to get the inflammation down and hence the pain under control.

    Everyone's different.

    Margaret
