PMR AND RA

Has anyone tried Pleon RA (Sulfasalazine?!) while on pred?

My rheumy has suddenly tried to put me on it for some reason.  I have read about it, and it has about as many side effects as pred.  Lovely!

Help and advice please.

C.

Constance, do you have RA? Regards, christina

Yes, of some sort (ankles and gnarled fingers). The many delights of old age!  As the saying goes "keep taking the tablets"!!

Constance, I don't know anything about RA or the drug other than I have just looked up the drug and it is used in the treatment of RA. It also has the added property of repairing the liver and is not as bad as MTX in relation to immune suppression? But, it is not as good as an anti inflammatory drug as preds.

has your consultant suggested it as a medication for your RA or your PMR?

      regards, Christina

My rheumy is a 'get off pred asap' person.  Tried MTX (revolting!) but was allergic to it, thank goodness!  Now he suggests Pleon RA.  I don't think so😡😡😡.

Hi Constance, in all the material I read there was no mention of this drug being used for PMR infact it stated that it was not a good anti inflammatory drug so what use it would have I am unclear of. Regards, Christina

A rheumatologist wanted me to take it rather than pred - he didn't think I had PMR. I wasn't impressed with the side effect list, you have to be monitored frequently and it makes you photosensitive - hardly ideal when I was moving to Italy! No-one else has thought it worth it so it has never been mentioned again. It is used for RA - maybe you'd get more response if you asked the question on the RA forum on here?

Hi Eileen!  Thanks for the reply.  In the meantime I have been on the RA site and, like many other topics, some say " it's great", but most say "I wouldn't touch it",  I'm definitely with the latter!!  I'd rather just take a pain killer every now and again.

When do you return to Italy?  There's another heat wave coming up!  Still, as you live half way up a mountain maybe it won't be too bad for you.😎😎

Got back today! It has been about 30C or above for a week at least, probably more. 34C down in the valley at Bolzano! To continue for at least another week. Lake Garda is forecast to have 37C during the day and 24-27C overnight - which is horrible as you cannot sleep. Goes down to about 15 or 16C up here...

Hi Eileen, welcome back! There's no point asking if you had a good rest because you've often dipped in throughout the time you've been away so not much rest there then! But, I hope the change was as good as a rest. Regards, christina

Whatever the last 3 weeks were it wasn't restful! We went out with the tour group most mornings and didn't return until late afternoon having lunch out every day! Then the final week was work at an international meeting...

I will write about the trip once I've caught up a bit as it is proof that PMR doesn't mean the end of such holidays - had I known what the programme was I might have decided not to book it but it has been fine so I'm glad I didn't know!
