PMR and vitamin d deficiency

i have been diagnose with the above after having painful legs etc. I am on 15mg of prednisolone and also alendronic acid. I had a call from my doctor saying I should go to the dentist before taking any more. I started to look into side effects and am now worried about taking it. I have not had a bone density scan, it is a preventative measures. Any thoughts?

I personally believe that in the not too distant future placing someone on a drug such as AA as a "preventative" measure without even a preliminary DXA scan will be considered a form of malpractice.  It is possible to improve bone density through nutrition, supplements and exercise.  I and others have done so.  These are the things which should be promoted as "preventative" to protect bones against the thinning pred may (but does not always) cause.  Please have a DXA scan as soon as possible.  I was at a dose of pred high enough to be implicated in bone thinning yet in the course of a year I improved my t-score from -2 to -1.6 completely naturally without drugs.

Vitamin D3 essential, but so too is Vitamin K2, and a few other things, like magnesium, which hopefully you are getting from your diet.  K2 will almost certainly need to be supplemented.  Not the same as K1 which we get from leafy greens.

Dear Jane, sorry about your legs.  As for Alendronic Acid, the camp is divided.  Some people tolerate it very well, I didn't and have stopped taking it.  An emerging line of thought on this Patient Forum is osteoporosis is best managed via diet and exercise.  I would expect you to have also been prescribed Calcium with Vit D, and possibly strong Vitamin B?  The second emerging opinion, from not just me, but others, is that AA does not prevent fractures, data analysis points to reducing the risk, and I personally think that is a dodgy claim.  It is up to you but do contact the National Osteoporosis Society, they are really helpful.  Top marks to your doctor by the way.  See if you can have a scan.  Probably will just confirm diagnosis, at least you will know.  Please don't worry, there's no need, Lots of people here to support and listen.
