PMR caused by stress and physical trauma?

Hello to everyone. I have just joined this forum but have been reading for the past few months. Very informative!

My PMR started November 2007, aged 61. I had been suffering from stress and anxiety for the previous 12 months, following a nasty fall. Although just bruises and pain, I never fully recovered and was unable to return to work.

I was eventually diagnosed with PMR in June 2008 and prescribed 10mg Prednisolone which helped with my mobility within 24 hours. Started aqua-aerobics 3 times a week from July. ESR reduced and now on 5mg.

I have also started an anti-inflammatory diet two weeks ago and am already feeling the benefits, significant reduction in puffiness and no further increase in weight.

Has anyone else found that their PMR began after a period of physical / mental trauma?

In my case, I think deep soft tissue injury, which did not show on any medical scans, may have lead to my increased ESR and CPR over several months. I strongly believe more research should be done in this area.

    Hi everyone

I have some good news about 2 weeks ago I woke up and realised I had no pain or stiffness and felt great but still on 15ml of prednisolone a day anyway went to the practice nurse for my monthly esr test and I knew it would come back lower and it was at 8 that is in the normal range the nurse suggested lowering the dosage by 1ml at a time an bring it down slowly it is 1yr since it started and I feel it burning itself out (hopefully) all i need to do is try and lose some of the wieght I have put on and lose my moon face. So keep fighting everyone I am sure we will all be back to normal eventually, best wishes to all and onwards and upwards

    Hi,

I have read a lot of this and I agree that there is a link to stress and trauama. i have had arthritis for many years. I had major surgery a few years ago and i haD A REALLY BAD FALL about a year ago. I have now developed PMR. I don'tseeem to get 100% response with steroids. i am radaing about people doing tai chi etc and some days I can barely get out of bed. My legs and arms are really weak and i feel lethargic and depressed. I certainly haven't experienced a miracle cure with steroids,

    Hi MSK

The nurse as reccomended that we drop 1mil every 2 weeks I am on my second week of reduced steroids and just started 13ml a day so in 2 weeks I will have another esr and hopefully keep reducing my dosage slowly I tried to reduce too quickly last time.I got down to a count of an esr of 8 and had to raise it back to 15ml when things got bad. Anyway we will see how things go

    all the best

    Hi Donone.

Thank you for your reply, I am currently on 2.5 mg a day for the past six weeks.

Due to see my Rheumothologist next two weeks, I doubt if my esr has reduced.

I am having painkillers every day and getting on with my life. Since I've been reducing pred I feel less stressed and more alive so hopefully I'll be able to remain positive and accept that it will take it's course.

Hi my PMR has only just been diagnosed and I have been a very healthy fit person until I had words  with my mother about her unnacceptable behaviour before christmas and then the rest of my family have been turned against me! Since all the upset I suffered dreadful stiffness etc. putting it all down to anxiety and tension, after not being able to take any more sleepless nights I finally had a blood test and my lovely Dr told  me I had a high inflammtion count...PMR hence the stiff shoulders neck hips, not being able to turn over, all the symptons known. YES this is a stress related illness I am sure, I too am on steroids and feel absolutely great again, still a bit stiff but getting there...I am only 50!!!

Hi everyone I had a bad fall last year and had a wedhe compression fracture of body of t3 and a head injury. I have had constant pain sincethen 8 monthe. Ortho sad it could be 6 to 9 months befor he offered any surgery. I more or less came right with acqupuncture untill he used 2 much bigger needles more deeply and it all came back. I have also tried physio massage with no relief. Drugs panadeine, amytryptylline nocte ( this only knocked me out for the night). Panadol 2 four times daily, tramadol when I am desperate. Antiinflammatories which did not relieve the pain. Pain is worse by night time and I have difficulty sleeping without painrelief eg last night 2 panadeine. I feel I was on my way to healing when the acupuncturist put in the bigger needles without my permission and back came the pain. Today after doing some research I have had a blood test for esr, rhuematoid factors, full blood count and crp at my request to GP. I am a retired nurse. I await these results with interest. Your comments on this forum are great and I will change my diet and start walking and I hope this will help. Will keep you posted.

Yes I have suspected this forsome time, my granddaughter who lives in Ireland has

Decided not to talk to me

    Anymore and has blocked

Me from contacting her. She has since had a baby boy,

    My first great grandson

After six girls. I brought my

    Grandchildren up in their

Teens. I said something which she took the wrong way. I'm 80 in September and have been very upset and now have contracted PMR. Yoghurt helps my stomach with the cortisone as it gets very upset with pain killers ect. I find it very interesting to eat things to help inflammation.
