PMR Early Warning Signs? Hamstrings Stiff or Sore?
Posted , 10 users are following.
This is my 2nd bout with PMR since 2013.
Tell me if any of you have experienced Hamstring sore or stiffness in the weeks preceding the Shoulder & Hip discomforts.
Weeks before my 1st bout my hamstrings felt like they needed stretching all the time. But stretching them did not gain any ground.
For instance when you start sessions twice or more a day and cannot touch your toes, in a week or so you should be able touch them. As time goes on you can grab your foot with both hands.
But with me it never improved or gained any flexibility.
Then it stopped when the classic shoulders and hips took over. I went to the Dr.... History............
So its back and the same thing happened. Anyone else? Thanks

Sounds like your bloodwork is not reflecting the reality of your situation. 😦

The fact your bloodwork is normal just means that the steroids are working. You can only tell if the PMR has gone into remission is if you stop pred and you have NO PMR pain!

Your bloodwork may be back to normal - but the PMR isn't gone. That's why symptoms ALWAYS trump lab numbers. And it is likely that in a few weeks those bloods will be raised again. You probably need just a very low dose of pred to keep it under wraps - even 1 or 2mg can work a miracle once you get down there.

My first noticeable symptom was difficulty rising from a seated position and taking the first couple of steps, long before my neck and shoulders became a problem. This symptom still remains my main diagnostic tool for recognising a PMR flare as opposed to "just" osteoarthritic creakiness. This stiffness which slows you when first starting to move is called gel or gelling phenomenon and is caused by fluids building up in the joints. Odd, really, because I perceive the pain in my muscles.

So Sorry you're suffering again. Almost all my PMR symptoms were unbearable upperleg front and back and pelvic girdle/ buttocks pain. The upper arm shoulder pain was negligible. Often my PMR is seronegative. Ive been on a pred about 10 years, with only one 9 month hiatus with no pred and no pain.

YES!!! and so i tried harder! i went to chiros, physios, and finally a deep muscle massage therapist--and i think thats what did me in. pretty soon i was so sore all over i was almost screaming. well, i think i did. im in my third year of pmr, still and sore and achey in the mornings but never pain free--not one of the "lucky" ones.

Two questions: 1) are you on enough pred - what dose? 2) Do you get pain relief at first but it is back before the 24 hours is up and the next dose is due?

the pain i was describing that was sooo bad was early stages of pmr when the docs said it was tendonitis (sed rate only 31 then--when i was bedridden with sed rate of 58 they said pmr). the pain and stiffness and soreness i have now is just plain ole pmr--some people are pain free on pred, i never was. what do i do? get up out of bed, stay up a while, go back to bed. in the daytime i just rest. its very easy for me to overdo it, the simplest things seem to cause problems. it is what it is, nature of the beast. best wishes to you.

I take 15mg (3 5mg tablets) a day with meals .
I was doing like you ask with the relief not lasting 24 hrs but found I was not considering my diet just eating and drinking (no alcohol) anything I felt like.
Now I'm better. Had my 1st good sleep with no shoulder pain when I woke up. Just a sensation.
I also started on turmeric & omega3 fish oil.
And eating anti inflammatory foods.

Thanks Guys,
I am feeling better. I realized I eat with no consideration for my condition and after study have backed off the sugars, started on anti inflammatory foods, Turmeric and Omega3 fish oil.
Mercy I was eating so badly the 15mg pred a day was taking hours to do anything.
This AM is the best my shoulders and hips have felt since the flareup.
So with me, if my hamstrings start to stiffen I know I am in the beginning stages of a flare.

If you have any fluid retention then stop SALT. I mean completely. There is enough salt in the foods we buy so no need to add anymore. You won't miss it at all.
No salt from anywhere as they are all the same. Salt means NaCl. I have had to have fluid removal under general anaesthetic. The pain can at times be very bad.

I am on 15mg a day. I was on 10 mg and tried to reduce. I got down to 6 and all went belly up. So for the time being I am on 15 mg. will move back down to 10 mg when things settledown. I find 10 mg in the morning and 5 mg around 9 pm. I have been told that I will never get below 10 mg a day. I also take oxy at night and Endone throughout the day. See you in a better place on day. 10 years of serious pain has me beaten. Funny thing is that the Doctors won't give me more drugs because they are not good for me. Bye for now.

My GP give me the drugs however it is to some extent Government controlled.
Why would this make a difference.
Thanks for replying.
