Pmr or sciatica??

Posted , 9 users are following.

For the 1st time Ever in this whole CRAZY journey, I'm experiencing hip pain. prior to today, pain/stiffness has been fairly delegated to my hands/fingers, wrists, shoulders, knees, and forearms.

should I take this as a sign my pmr is getting worse?😖

could it be sciatica instead.

any input would be greatly appreciated!

I made the assumption it was both sides, Lynda, but if it is one side it may be sciatica which I experienced a couple of times as I was reducing. My sympathy to you as it can be extremely painful. I found that if I kept moving as much as possible it helped but it may not be the same for you. If the pain is bilateral I would suspect the PMR. It was one of my main problems prior to diagnosis and made turning over in bed very painful and difficult but then so did the sciatica but it was restricted to one side. Eileen may well answer in the morning but it's night time for people in Europe.....bedtime.

yeah silver...it IS just one side! it's becoming more painful as the day progresses....Ughhh! one more thing!

It does not sound like sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs down the back of the leg. It is agony though.

hi Ptolemy....my pain is running down the outside of my hip/thigh (??)

It does sound unlikely then it is sciatica, the others have put some other suggestions forward which may fit.

I think Eileen has mentioned bursitis in one of her posts. I too have hip pain - just one side - so like you any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi lynda62707

I think you may have Myofarcial pain caused by connective tissues in the muscle. This can happen when taking pred and does not have to be bilateral.....something else presenting itself...and the beat goes on!...You could get some Voltarol cream for muscle pain to rub into your leg.......👍

I hope its not sciatica, feeling for you!!! as you have been through enough.

I'm sure I read somewhere that sciatica can happen .

keeping my fingers crossed for you Lynda

Possibly trochanteric bursitis - it is often found in PMR and is the main reason for one-sided pain in PMR. It tends to start as a dull nagging ache on the outer aspect of your thigh, it can cause sharper pain in the groin too. I thought it was OA in my hip but it faded once I was on pred. It is aggravated by the actions that involve that area - walking, stairs and so on. The best way to deal with it is local steroid injections - in the muscle, not the joint - but higher doses of oral pred will work eventually too.

when I was 17yrs old, I had a steroid injection in the ball of my foot. it was TRULY the most painful experience I'd ever had! (and I'm not afraid of shots!) I swore I'd Never have that done again. is this what you're referring to??

btw....the fact that all these responses are SO incredibly out of order and cease to make sense after awhile, is REALLY starting to get to me!!! after replying to any given post and when I press the button to post my reply....it is posted 4-5,or more out of order and I've gotta think when whomever reads it does so, they're scratching their head trying to make sense of it!!!

      FRUSTRATED!!!!!!!

Same sort of shot - but they don't hurt as much is a foot shot would. Though as I said to the nurse who was obviously trying to calm me down about the injection, compared with the pain they are for they are nothing! And the rheumy was laughingly agreeing with me.

You have to bear in mind you are just the next in the queue for you response to be printed - the replies ahead of yours were posted first. Just take your turn!!

I've had one-sided hip pain from time to time, I don't think anything to do with PMR as such, except maybe more likely with pred-induced myopathy. Pretty certain it's referred pain from nerve compression in the spine. I religiously do my exercises and keep potential cripplehood at bay.

Before diagnosis and treatment it was so bad I thought I should be in line for a hip replacement. X-ray showed no sign of osteoarthritis although I have OA in many other joints, and physiotherapy and a new slate of exercises have sorted it.

So maybe the pain is origiinating in your spine?

hmmm....could be! I've got several compression fractures on my spine....could this be the culprit??

Compression fractures can cause all sorts of problems...
