How long is a piece of string?  Sorry Kathy we are all so difference but to answer your question I get sore shoulders when I have been on one side for a long time at night.  Mainly due to the fact that it's painful to lie on my left hip which does wake me up if I happen to turn over.  Just need a new body!!smile

Doesn't have to be due to the PMR - maybe you need a new pillow or mattress?

i have it both starts about 5 am

That coincides with the shedding in the body of the cytokines that cause the pain and stiffness of PMR  - if you took your pred about 2-3am it probably wouldn't happen! Not that I'm suggesting it!

Try a Duvet sandwich and an triangular pillow.

Take you pred at 5am with a cuppa and a bread and butter  sandwich, then snuggle back down and let it get to work.  (Flask of Hot Water and tea-bag - wrap sandwich in foil.

Seriously gone, no pain or ache no matter what direction to turn it, use it, put stress on it? Internally rotated? Externally?  Pressing on it with fingers?

    Just sleeping on it?

Is your range of motion good in both shoulders?

Does any pain come back during day?

    I'm just curious...

Yes, gone. Full range of motion....cannot press on my shoulders to find the pain...nothing. No pain during the day. In the beginnng of the PMR I had no pain during the day, but when I went to bed I was immediately crippled! Might be from laying on one side for so long...waking up...then switching...then waking up. Thank you for all your comments!

Thanks Kathy. Happy you don't have all the old pains! Yea!

when I had Trocanteric bursitis in hip it's hurt to sleep on it.  So, I hope it's not the start of bursitis, might ask about rehab type exercises for rotator to strengthen before goes too far...if that's it.  I'm doing those and my shoulders feel so much better when I do them and I'm getting stronger and less pain in shoulders.

Try elevating your upper body.  I have managed to create a comfy pile of various pillows to support my head, neck and shoulders (took some experimenting, including swapping pillows) and find I sleep much better now. I slept on my side all my life until PMR and now have to sleep on my back, and elevating upper body has been very helpful.

A small round pillow (like a sausage roll) under your knees when lying on your back works wonders.

Yes, glad you added that - the knee pillow is a must!

Do you know about slither sheets (now called easy sheets) they were invaluable to me and it was another patients who told me about them.

These little tips and tricks (all 26 of them) given to us from patients throughout the Uk and overseas - gathered over 7 years) are all contained in the booklet 'Living with PMR & GCA' available from the North East website if you are interested.

I will reiterate what the others have said - try taking a small portion of your pred dose in the early hours (I've just started taking about a 1/3 sometime after 2am when I wake up for the normal nightly loo run), and use a rolled up pillow under your legs!
