Have recently had my dose reduced. However, have experienced very severe pain in the left leg - groin and knee. Saw my docotr today - he said that steroids weaken the muscles. It is one of the side effects.

Has your doctor checked if you have osteoarthritis in your hip and knee?

Yes - i am to have an xray for this - was previously xrayed 3 years ago - diagnosis was moderate to severe OA in the left hip - have not experienced any pain until now. However, the pain that I am having in the groin and knee is relieved greatly by rubbing in 'Deep Heat' to the effected parts.

      Thank you for your reply

When I had reduced to 4mgs. I,too, experienced groin pain and My GP suggested taking paracetamol to see if it repieved the pain. He said this was to see if it was OA and not PMR. It did relieve the pain marginally but I could not tolerate the paracetamol.  He then referred me for possible hip replacement and Xrays confirmed OA. Total Hip replacement highly successful. Was advised by hospital not to continue with stroid reductions until after hip op. This was more than three years ago and I  have been pain  and steroid free since then so my GPs suspicions were proved correct. Well worth considering referral as xray will give pretty conclusive evidence of OA.

Hey Gillian, I have PMR and could not tolerate prednisone. I'm treating it with supplements and foods for inflammation and immune building. I also have groin & extreme L knee pain!! Plus shoulders & hips!! I'm counting on it burning itself out in a year or two!!!

Yes!! I have experienced weak muscles in my calves and gluts, my speacalist said it was the Preds and also the fact you reduce. Give it time to settle : Slower the better : One thing I have learnt about this site is that the Preds do effect people different in some ways, we are not all the same: Best of luck :  Cheers

In the beginning of PMR, my groin pain, the pectineus muscle, was super painful as well as both hip flexors and hamstring. After about 7 months and beginning gentle physical therapy and the therapist palpated with his fingers (yes a bit embarrassing, but felt good) it suddenly went away. All the other pains stayed.

Ive noticed in reducing that phantom pains appear, like ankle, toe, thumb, knee. But fortunately they go away too.

I got trocanteric hip twice now, but therapy has helped that so I'm sure it's not PMR related. Shots only helped once.

yes, I'm one of those who Prednisone affected differently. I lossed weight, but unfortunately lossed a lot of muscle. But am gaining it back with help of therapy and myself gently lifting weights. My legs looked so gross (sagging skin and sagging muscle), but seeing some definition again. Yea!

I keep trying to share that what's helping me most is learning how to meditate, I tried for years but didn't really know how, finally got a guided meditation that helps me put mind in another state of no pain. smile

Also, picturing your self daily as a healthy, whole person doing the things you enjoy, telling your brain that's what I want.

Thank you for your helpful comments - it is reassuring that there are many out there experiencing PMR in different ways.
