PMR, Prednisine, Infections

I have a sinus infection; has been going on for about 2 weeks.

I am taking 7-1/2m of prednisone. I won't be able to see a doctor until Monday...but would I be better off without the antibiotic...just ride it out. I have some facial pain, but it is mostly relieved by the post nasal drip. Which is worse for my system...the antibiotic, or the infection itself?

I live in Florida and pretty much have constant sinus problems.

Unless you know you have infection I'm not sure you wouldn't

just be better off with an anti-histamine.  There are some pretty

good ones OTC now.    If I got up on any given day and didn't have

post nasal drip I'd think the world rotated on it's axis......It's been

a given for me most of my life.  We've had a terribly high pollen

count this year and something is blooming in FL all the time.

That is interesting, I seem to have a runny nose. I notice it particularly just before I go to bed, but it happens during the day too.

    More likely the infection itself.

Recently I started using the Ointment VapoRub that's analgesic and brings a good relief.

Hope you get better soon. 🌺

      Enjoy the Bahamas, Kathy!

The VapoRun would be a good thing

It brings a relief and it is just an ointment.

I am using now almost everyday this old ointment which I had forgot the existence . I am glad I did !

Againg enjoy your staying over there!

I usually get a cold once a year that develops into a sinus infection. I have been getting an antibiotic, but this time I decided to forgo the drugs and try something else. So I put boiling water in a bowl and added eucalyptus oil, cloves, and a bunch of other hot spices. I leaned over the bowl with a towel over my head and stayed there for 5 minutes. I did this twice a day and within a few days my sinuses cleared up.

Annie, I'm glad to hear others using essential oil, I too diffuse eucalyptus oil. I like your recipie you mentioned.

I took a benedryl one night, NEVER will I do that again! My body reacted so bad. Didn't sleep a wink! I felt like pins and needles sticking my limbs all night.

I asked my pharmacist about decongestant and prednisone and he said no. Told me to do nasal spray. But that doesn't really so much.

I was introduced to nasal wash by gently squeeze water solution up one nostril and wow! I felt so much better.  Then I'm able to blow more (gently blow) snot out and was surprised one day it was yellow. So I guess I had infection but it was gone (the yellow) next day.  So, I'm a fan of nasal rinses now. Can't get my husband to do it. Just relax as you use it and it will be fine.

oh and I put a tiny bit of eucalyptus oil under my nose.  Peppermint oil also opens sinus, but do not get in your eyes!

Oh, and my doctor says stay away from antibiotics while on Pred if you can. If infection lasts weeks on end, then perhaps.

Good luck Kathy, I hope you get relief and enjoy the Bahamas!

I also use a nasal wash and it helps with sinus problems.  There

is such a thing called "nettie pot" but can also buy  plastic

bottle with salt to add to water.    Yellow or green stuff is a sign

of infection.    Saline solution spray helps also.l  I live in FL

and have so many things blooming all the time and constant

post nasal drip.....always.    I never knew about pred and

Benadryl but do know that if you take any blood pressure

meds you can't take anti-histamines.  Benadryl acted like a

sleeping pill to me back when I could take it.

I use menthol crystals in hot water. I find them fantastic for clearing my head.  Really cheap from the pharmacy. I remember as a child sitting over a bowl of hot water with a towel over my head, I cannot remember if it was eucalyptus or something else in the water.

I always start with the nasal rinse and/or neti pot...but it has gotten away from me and it has been about 2 weeks.
