PMR, Prednisone, Increasd bone density!

Posted , 7 users are following.

2-1/2 years on prednisone...had my 2 yr. bone density test...

?Bone density has 'statistically, significantly increased by 3.3%'!!!

I had previously (before the test) decided against taking Actonel, a bone density medication recommend by m rheumy. I am surprised and relieved.

Slight osteopenia in the hips...same as two years ago.

A ray of sunshine in a storm??

So good to hear!!! What are you doing?

Yes, sunshine, bliss, gratitude, love of life, ahhhhhhhh. Wonderful news.

By 'what are you doing'...I don't know. I have actually exercised less in the past 2-/2 years, obviously. I have always taken a calcium supplement...and then at some point added vitamin D and Vitamin D3.

Must be the vitamins, in addition to the almond milk in my morning shake...? I have the doctors written report, but have not seen him yet...will ask.

      Good news!

I recently had a DEXA scan and although there was a slight change from 6 years ago, pre Pred, I'm still at low risk(except they bumped me to moderate due to long term prednisone).  I haven't been taking calcium and Vit D3 on a regular basis but after reading your post will be more diligent.

Thanks for posting and stay well!

The calcium and D is the only thing I can think of....I didn't think you could actually increase Ben density...I have been looking to maintaining density.

Test was n the same DEXA, same hospital.

I've read different scanners can give different results. I hope that's not the case.

But forge on! I've read how truly seeing ourselves and believing ourselves healthy rewires our brain for healing.

And even if it is different scanners, who's to say it isn't the better result which is correct anyway?

Anhaga, I totally agree! smile I'm telling myself my results was from the scanner that's NOT right Hee, Hee... Well, the one that gives "worse" numbers so to speak.

Plus I read one can show decreased density but still be strong.

So...believe...deeply...we are strong, we are strong, we are strong...

Laughing at myself, feel like being a cheerleader today. Rah, rah, rah.

It was the same scanner as two years ago...at the same hospital!

My doctor was not happy when I refused the bone drugs, she actually said that she was going to note on my chart that I was going against her recommendation. I guess in case I break a hip and then blame her. I hope my next Dexa is as good as yours, Kathy. Or I'll have to eat my words.

i need to email my rheumy right now and let him know that I will not be taking the Actonel. I assume he has, by now, seen my bone density report. At my last appointment, when he recommended the bone drug...before the bone test...he asked me to let hm know if I was not going to take it. Guess he will have it in writing!
