PMR - Stiffness and Soreness in Hands, too?

Posted , 10 users are following.

I have read about and experience pain in my shoulders and upper arms which along with my blood work led to the PMR diagnosis and subsequent relief from the Prenisone which was prescribed.

My hands are quite stiff in the morning, quite uncomfortable to open or close my fists.  Not sure if I read much about others complaining of their hands hurting.  Is this common? Or an indication of some other issue?

It does resolve along with the shoulder/arm pain when I take the prednisone.

Right now I have soreness and stiffness especially in my right hand, but not always.

Not sure if this is OA related or part of PMR.

Before prednisone my hands were super stiff in the morning. Before I talke 20 mg pred in the morning my shoulders and hamstrings are stiff/feel tight.

Yes it is common for your hands to hurt.  Mine get stiff and ache.  It is part of the PMR.

My hands wrists and fingers are painful on waking especially the right one. Part of PMR as never had a problem before.  It wears off within a couple of hours as the pred kicks in.  Also suffer from lower back ache usually in the evening.  Such a bore and has to be borne.

Hi good morning one and all, long time since I posted on the forum, but this particular subject of early morning stiffness/pain in one's hands is one I am struggling with at this moment in time. I cannot make a fist first thing in the morning but as the day goes on things do improve, still quite painful but I'm able to carry on with most activities. All other PMR sites are still uncomfortable (shoulders, hips, buttocks, thighs + feet etc.etc.) but more than managable, Pred. dose now down to 7.5mg. from 30mg. last June. I consider myself to be one of the more fortunate members of "The PMR Club". Back to the hand problem, my hands & feet are to be X-rayed next Wednesday, GP thinks it coluld be an arthritic problem setting up in both & wants to check it out. A tip to help the hand stiffness/pain first thing in the morning, I have a large mug of tea first thing & clasp it in both hands whilst it is very hot & find that after a minute or two the pain & stiffness ease significantly. ATB & best wishes to you all.

    Kind regards

    Richard (Mr Solo)

Thank you for that good tip!  Heat usually helps all parts but hadn't thought of that one for the hands!

One of my first symptoms was in my hands. They would be clenched in fists when i woke up and in pain. I would physically straighten outy fingures. I also got it in my toes and couldn't walk.

Prednisone took the pains away but after my first drop my toe pain has returned but not as bad.

    We are all together

Sounds like your hands and feet are having muscle spasms. My feet sometimes keep me awake at night! Hot water bottle helps.

Not happy to have the stiffness in my hands (which does resolve after my morning dose of Prednisone), but I am pleased to know at least it's part of the condition and not something else to deal with.

    Thanks for all your input.

My PMR has migrated from my left knee to my thighs...later to my right shoulder, then the left, then both.  More recently to my neck, and now my hands.  My fear about my hands has to do with a concern that what I really have are the early markers of Rheumatoid Arthritis.  The more I read, the more I am convinced that what i have is PMR and that it has now affected my hands.

Gilman, I had really bad hand, wrists, stiffness & pain, for years prior to the PMR diagnosis last July & starting prednisone. It's just about gone, but have some days it bothers me, nothing like it did though.

Well, my hands (mostly right hand) hurts/aches after I've eaten inflammatory foods, sugar, wheat flour, is what I've noticed so far. I stopped night shades (tomatoes, peppers) due to acid reflux and this hand pain, but definately sugars make it appear. Darn it.
