Pmr symptoms

I was diagnosed with PMR last July, I originally thought I had strained my arms or suffered from stiffness due to old age I am 72. One day I could not get out of bed or even get dressed I could not even get my foot up to the door step, the pain and stiffness got progressively worse.  I was given 8x5ml pred which made a huge difference and I felt really much better and could move with ease. I am now taking 10ml which keeps my fairly even, unless I do too much then the next day I am suffering with stiffness of the limbs. Taking a naproxon tablet sorts me out, and unless I over do it I keep fine. I guess I am luckier than a lot of people who seem to have awful symptoms. I hope that eventually I will recover.  Reading the forum has given me answers to my questions, and it us good to hear other peoples stories. Unless you suffer from PMR you just don't know how it effects your life.

Hello Tlsser,,, it's nice to hear from someone who has reduced medication fairly quickly to a low level without too many problems! It gives me hope and comfort as I hope my rheumatologist will start to taper me tomorrow! Thanks for your positivity! I need it xx

I spoke to my physician last week, she decided to keep me on my current 10ml for at least two more  months. Hope your meds go well and you manage to get yours reduced.  Regards

Tisser I am just so impressed with how well you have reduced the dosage of pred. Much better than me! One thing I have heard that NSAIDs such as Naproxen do not mix well with pred and should be avoided if possible. I don't know if your doctor suggested mixing the two?

Ptolemy... I have not found any problems taking naproxon ... I make sure I take omeprazole in the am. I have had long time problems with one of my ankles and find that sometimes naproxon reduces the discomfort for that also. I am aware of what pills I take and must confess I am not a habitual pill taker, in fact befor PMR I was not on any regular pills.  Hope you continue to improve.  The Doctor was happy about my taking Naproxon she does ring me on a regular basis to check how I am doing.

Yes, you are right --- unless you suffer from PMR you just don't know how it effects your life.  It is miserable when one has so much pain and cannot get out of bed.  It happened to me recently.  It made me cry!  I was given 40 mg of Prednisone for thee days which helped. This was 3 weeks ago.  Now I must carefully taper down 1 mg a month from 20 mg.

Good luck to you - I feel for you!

After 3 weeks of the last most painful flare I have ever experienced.  I am finally starting to feel better, and I walk better with less pain in the middle of my back.  There is HOPE!

Thank you for your caring message.

Good Morning Tisser, I recently just turned 60 and the symptoms you describe are exactly the way I was.  Couldn't get out of bed, into bed, into the shower, out of the shower.  It took me two and a half hours for an 8 minute car ride to see my dr.  I will never ever forget that type of pain.  I started at 20mg pred on 14th November and have reduced today to 12.5 and I hope and pray that I have no flare up.  Please keep in touch and let us all know how you are getting on.  Good luck on your journey.  Regards Pat

Thank you Pat hope that all goes well, and your reduction also goes ok.

Do you get any side effects from pred? I find that I get very hot on occasions and my face goes a bit red, I did  have problems sleeping on the higher dose I had to start with, but find I can sleep better these days.

i have managed to keep my weight stable, as my Dr warned me that your appetite increases..... Other than that I keep reasonably well, apart from the occasional flare up if I do too much. Take care

Hi Tisser, Yes I do get side effects.  One is yes I get very hot, it's like my own built in thermastat.  I remember it was -9 below freezing in Belfast, Northern Ireland and I was nearly going to sleep on top of the bedclothes as I was so hot.  Also my face would redden and still does.  Also my Dr. said it would increase my appetite (which it hasn't).  I have put on a bit of weight but not that much, yet my face is very full which I put down to steroids.  I have about 3 chins.  I haven't had a flare (not yet) so taday is my first day going from 15mg to 12.5mg  I have a sore throat but I don't know if it's connected.  Yes I had problems sleeping at the beginning of my pred journey but now I am ok most nights.  Take Care  Regards Pat
