Points, badges, what for?

Can someone direct me to info about what I get for my points and badges?

      You know, if you REALLY think about it the rankings are rather pointless (if you will excuse the pun). For example, I don't think I have created a discussion more than a couple of times in the last 3 years - but it means someone who starts a discussion to ask a question gets more points than the person who answers who has more knowledge. 

      The person who chips in in a thread, replying to ever other person's comment with "Oooh, how lovely", "Ouch that must hurt" or other such banal comments can acquire points for nothing. I have an example thread in mind BTW.

      And the "almost troll" who makes a full-time job of making comments in fields they have no knowledge at all and joins many forums about which they know nothing is getting rewards that make them appear knowledgeable.

      I really couldn't care a toss myself - but for people looking for help they are likely to be impressed by "most supportive" or "super contributor" but the person may not have contributed anything meaningful.

      For a site that wants to protect an air of respectability I'm far from sure this is something that is an advantage.
