Polymyalgia and giant cell artritis

I suffer with Polymyalgia and giant cell artritis... I have not responded to steroids... any ideas Why?

    Maybe because the diagnosis is incorrect - or because you haven't been given a high enough dose.

    There are no blood tests that confirm PMR and GCA - the ESR and CRP are generally raised in 80% of patients but they can be raised in many other conditions too. 

    I'm surprised a GP is countermanding a specialist's instructions - and if you really do have GCA and 40mg is not enough to combat the symptoms your GP's action (or inaction) may well be putting your vision at risk. On the other hand - she may be correct and feel there is smething being missed. But I doubt the average GP is capable of doing the detective work. At the very least she should first try the increased dose of pred.

    Like the others - I think you need a different GP for another opinion. And get back to the specialist by phone at least and inform him of the situation.
