Pooh to the negatives, what about the positives

At 3 weeks down the line from my first, shiny new hip I spent two weeks wallowing in stiffness, immobility, frustration and constipation!

I have found certain positives to my new situation, no housework (punches air), tea arriving un-requested, an expert knowledge of the TV guide and an ability to fall asleep on my high rise toilet seat (yes, I did).

I just wondered what anyone else is finding positiveor funny, apart from the joy in knowing that you will be able to walk again very soon.

I apologise for mentioning constipation but I became obsessed with my bowels at about day 7. My partner now serves up a 'pooh powder' along with tea and toast  but the other morning I put it on a low table only to hear our every hungry labrador tucking into it.

Constipation - I have to agree its horrid. I have become an expert at hand squeezing my bum cheeks to get impacted stuff out. Impacted is the worst and there's no other way out than giving it a helpful squeeze on your bum! twisted

I take senna and porridge too and lactulose. Bowels become nocturnal too - I have woken in the night just knowing that in an hour then the call will come.

Second time around I know what to expect and just what to do to get round the problem!! It gets better with time though I am now hooked on porridge for regularity.xxx

oops just remembered I dropped a senna tablet this morning - no wonder our black labrador has been a bit subdued!

Having my partner wash my feet - a first!

I solved constipation with mountains of prunes.

Wow your post is like my life. My hubby oils my dry feet and puts my socks on. Used prunes to avoid constipation.

My positives . sister aged 84 children and grandchildren all helping me out first 3'weeks.

Coming off cocodamol and pooping well.prunes and porridge for me too.

    Not having to hoover.

Being able to sit in the sun on the rare days that we get some.

Oh and I feel asleep on the fake leather chair supplied by occupational therapy. Felt myself going. Had some of that rubbery stuff for under mats do put it on.

AND people thinking I am too young for a hip op.

I still haven't hoovered though I did push the ewbank over the lounge floor last week!

I'm 62 and some of the other hippies in hospital thought I was in my 40s!!

I was dreading after the op more than the actual op.

    NO driving!! No independence! Boredom!

After getting over the first couple of days doing not very much but resting I realised Wimbledon was on. Now it has been years since I have been able to sit and watch the tennis. In fact it's been so long  I don't know half the players and the ones I do know are now grey haired commentators!!!

Anyway, all I did for two weeks was exercise, make lunch, make dinner, walk the dog (he's getting knackered now as he's old and I'm walking further and further!)and sleep, and sleep (and be on here all hours of early morning cos couldn't sleep!) and watch tennis, and more tennis, enjoy every minute of it and FEEL NO GUILT because I had to rest. I even saw the men's final. I went to my friends 60th birthday party that afternoon and ended up watching the tennis with a lot of like minded people, it was great. Short final so went back and joined  the party - had a great day

the weather has been so lovely nice loose dresses for sore old hip/leg/bum/knee/scar. I've really enjoyed the sunshine I live on a farm with lots of horses and I walk the dog round the fields for my exercise. Bit uneven but I always take my trusty old stick

i drove for the first time yesterday - too soon I feel, but another week and it will be fine. I have not missed driving at all, I am surprised.

All in all apart from the pain, not sleeping and feeling tired I have quite enjoyed my forced rest! 😄

    all the best

    Carol😄 Xx

    Hi Kate

I never had a problem with constipation. I ate candied pinapple peices and pineapple juice from the time I was allowed to eat / drink back on the ward. Best natural laxative you could ever have. I hope your dog didn't suffer too much. lol

Yay, nearly everyone saying I was young to have a hip replacement when I am 52 was quite jolly.

One of my major positives has been having to make some serious life changes. Hip replacements means I can't return to my job so I am tentatively starting up a new venture.

Life is for living in the best way you can, don't you think?

That is so funny.....glad to see you are keeping your dog regular too!

Its the cakes for me......I have been brought so much cake and slices from friends my waistline is expanding. I fear in the next week I'm going to have to go and buy a pair of size 14 trousers for the first couple of weeks back at work!!

Happy days ahead for us all 😜

Yeah, waistline has expanded, at least I can't eat flowers. Amy, the labrador, has eaten far worse than Movicol and will live to steal another day
