Pop in muscle/ligament above hip socket

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am at day 20 today and was very happy with my slow and steady progress. I was walking slowly with my walker in the house when I felt a pop about 1 inch above and slightly back from where I assume the new ball joins the socket. almost instantly I could feel a little bump there. No real pain and I am not taking painkillers. I was worried I might have loose part so I went right in for an xray and will talk to my family doctor tomorrow morning.

I don't feel I did anything to go past 90 degrees or strain the hip but I was a bit cold and not warmed up yet.

I wonder if I tore a muscle or ligament and that is the small bump I feel and the pop I felt. Thoughts? Ice and R and R therapy?

hi. sounds like besides this you're doing very well. it's great you could get xray and get it reviewed tomorrow. I'd try not to worry too much as if it was anything to do with the new joint youd be in a lot of pain on moving.

best wishes - keep us updated

In my experience a torn muscle or ligament going badly enough to "pop" would be extremely painful and would require the kind of kinetic force that you are unlikely to be able to generate at day 20. I (currently at day 35) have experienced a minor "pop" several times in the operated joint while walking particularly after prescribed exercises. But that seems to have subsided? So perhaps the joint doing something? Personally if is wasnt painful i wouldnt worry

    Thanks for the info!

I saw the xrays...no loose bolts!! I met physio yesterday and they alleviated my concerns.

They are 99% sure i may have a small tear in the area of the muscles and lower layers were sewn together.

I thought it might have been a partial tear or detachment from the hip. Not a chance as the only incision in that area runs up and down. The small bump is getting smaller and i have the go ahead to continue my daily circuit around the house with walker and cane as well as home exercises.

Day 23 today, i tried a few steps with no cane, with no confidence. The strength was there, but my mind wasn't ready.

So, i tried a few steps again holding the cane off the floor with both hands...just in case. Bingo! I took my first 100 steps with no aid around the house with no cane.

I am in no rush to push on this but it felt great!

You sound like you are doing well and things will improve gradually day by day. I think this popping is usual in the early days although can be alarming when you first feel it ! .I am at 6 weeks + now the popping feeling seems to have lessened a lot and I suppose thats because the joint is bedding in . Its all fascinating stuff .Not quite walking outside without crutches but neatly there..More of a security/ safety thing ss the weather hss been so horrenous.Take care 😊
