Positive IBS cure/story?

I'm currently on holiday in Spain and I'm struggling! I'm sat in my appartment looking across a beautiful beach and sea scape, but again! feeling unwell and dreading going out for dinner! Its spoiling the holiday for not just myself, but for my wife also! I certainly dont want to bore people with my medical history, but briefly I'm 51 years old and for around eight years I've been trying to find out why I feel sick/tired/constipated/loose and generally unwell for most of the time. I also struggle sleeping on my side and feel sick and have back pain when I try. I also urinate a lot!!! My doctor has diagnosed IBS and I'm currently trying the FODMAP diet, but my question to everyone is: Has anyone ever beaten IBS, or at least got it under control so they can live a decent life. Any positive stories I'm sure would be greatly appreciated for anyone suffering, I'm now going to try to find a FODMAP friendly restaurant! Wish me luck!

    Hi Gary and everyone else, just wondering how you are all getting on two years on. I was diagnosed with 'ibs' in March/April was put on amitriptyline for a while but was dozed all day every day, however did reduce the pain. After two weeks in Tenerife, I was adamant for a colonoscopy and gastroscopy, which I have had but show nothing. GI Doc puts it down to stress and prescribed 50mg Sertraline. Fingered crossed this will helped. Also trying the silicol gel and symprove probtiotic liquid as of next week. Been very stressful as I meant to start uni on the 23rd (18 years old male) and having doubts. Any updates/ successs stories would be greatly appreciated.

    I have been diagnosed with IBS but I don't believe it is a condition, rather, it is a range of symptoms of something else.  Mine has been getting worse over the years. I was basically told to go away and take diarrhoea tablets - not very helpful.

    I am taking good quality probiotics and they are helping.  You need to get them from a health food shop or recommended by a nutritionist.  The ones you can get in supermarkets or high street chains are not very good and a waste of money.

    I think the food triggers are different for everyone but there are some which seem to be common, which doctors do seem to know about.  You can look them up on the internet.

    You also need to eat a healthy diet - not too much sugar, no processed foods, no fizzy drinks and no junk food.  It is hard work at first but definitely worth it.

    I hope I haven't stated the obvious but I have worked this all out for myself.  The medical profession do not have a clue when it comes to IBS.

    Just wanted to add a few more things.  Several people I know, who don't have IBS, become bloated after eating bread.  I believe that the rubbish that is put in food today is partly causing the problems and also the toxins in the environment.  IBS is increasing a lot these days and there must be a reason for it.  Try to eat food that is natural.

    I can't even drink tap water - I use a water filter.
