Positive stories and advice alcohol with citalopram

Hi Everyone...

I am half way through week 5 on cit and I am feeling better. However I am far from perfect… I just need some positive energy from your stories and how long it took you guys to start feeling better est…?

Also I am going on holiday soon and there is going to be a lot of drinking involved. Although I’m nervous about mixing alcohol with cit… Please can you tell me your past experiences? Is it a bad idea to drink?

Thanks xx

Last thing Tayla is to drink on any meds that's my advice could end up with more of a problem, and regret drinking in first place so it's a big no from me .

    Hi Tayla.

Ive now been on cit for 4 months, and it took some time before I noticed it was helping. You really need to be patient and not give up on yourself with it because it takes time for you body and nervous system to get used to the drug so dot worry if your not feeling instant positive effects. I actually found things got worse for me before they got better so clearly your already doing well with it!

I can' only say I notice  the positive changes when I look back at how I was before taking it. Everyone is different on it though so bear that in mind.

Regarding alcohol, I have found it I need less alcohol when out because it gets you drunk quicker, it also causes me to have black spots where I don't remember anything of the night despite not being that drunk as never having had that before when drinking. The hangovers the next day are horrendous for me on cit, I have a headache that won't go for like 12 hours despite hydration & pain relief. & feel generally terrible. Never used to have hangovers like that. So just bear that in mind when you start, go easy and see how you respond to it at first.  I don't find the drinking worth it with the effects so I've gone off drinking as wasn't helpful for me.

Dont know if that's helpful but everyone is different so you just need to see how you go with it!

Hope you enjoy your holiday and take care!

    Hi Tayla.

I am all for positive energy and happy to be able to offer some!  Whilst I recognise a lot of people don't have the success they had hoped for with cit - my own experience is good.  It takes me around 3 weeks for it to kick in - doesn't make me feel particularly up or down, but does help even out extremes of emotion.  I am not a heavy drinker but do have a couple of glasses of wine and never experienced side effects from that.  My advice - go on holiday and remember the maxim "all things in moderation".  If you can manage without a drink, fine, but being overly anxious of what may or may not happen if you have a glass, will only make you feel worse!  Obviously don't go mad - make one drink last!  And I suggest you get some balance by getting lots of fresh air and exercise to get the benefits of the holiday without ill effects!  Good luck and enjoy x

    Hi Tayla

Dont drink on Citalopram. Here is my experience In January of this year I wemt to celebrate a friends birthday. I had two wine spritzers then we went to a champagne bar. I had one very small glass of champagne felt fine went to the restaurant downstairs ordered my meal then wham I blacked out. I was out of it for the rest of the night and when my friends just tjought I was sleeping they tried to wake me and I was violently sick numerous times. I have never felt so ill in all my life thought i would "risk it" it really wasn;t worth it.
