Positive view on Colonoscopy

I have just returned home from my C and I wanted to reassure readers that sometimes it can all go smoothly. I went to the Whittington in London where they use Picolax laxative. I followed the two days before diet instructions and taking advice from previous commentators I did not eat too much but enough to keep me going. My last food was at 1.00pm Sunday although I could have eaten until 4.0pm. My appt. was for 2pm Monday.

So at 6.00pm I took the Picolax by straw but there was nothing wrong with the taste, lemony alka seltzer?

Then I waited thinking it would happen quickly but it didn't start until 9.00pm, 10 minutes on the loo, no pain, no volcanic eruptions. I was a bit concerned that it wasn't going to work and then I wouldn't be able to have the C.

That was it for that day.

Next day I had another sachet at 7am and that started working after 45 mins but not much. I have several more during the morning but short visits to the loo as it came out quickly.

A couple just before I had to leave and another two when I was changed and waiting to go in but quick watery visits.

I got a score of 9 for bowel prep and no complaints so it must have worked.

So the prep went well and onto the C.

The staff were lovely even the consultant. I had fentanyl and Midazolam for pain and sedation. I felt woozy to start but then I was well aware of what was going on and watched the screen. I had a blanket and a pillow and they gave me shorts to wear with a hole in the back for modesty.

I didn't feel sedated but I did feel very calm so that could be the aim. It didn't,t hurt as such just some ouches as it went round bends but he pulled back a bit and tried again. Quite soon he said that he had got all the way. Then looking at the screen on the way back and a swirl around the rectum.

Of to recovery, cup of tea and after my vitals had been done twice I could go home with my report which thankfully was OK.

I know this may not be the same for everyone but it is not always a horrible experience.

Yeah that's a good description of the whole process. Good job.

in my case I absolutely detest the prep. It can make me tired and dehydrated.

I have them done every thee years due to polyps findings each time.

Thanks that's what happened to me but I did not feel anything and did not even know when he inserted the probe.  I guess everybody is different but mine went ok except he removed a polyp that's was 4 weeks ago and am still chasing for the results.  I guess no news is good news.
