Positives of Sertraline

Well I'd like to start by saying there is some light at the end of the tunnel..finally!

It took me quite some time to realise I was depressed...I thought I was losing my mind,to the point of having suicidal thoughts.why?...im 27,have an amazing life & lots to look forward to...I was dwelling on the past far to much & scared of the future.so after spending the night in an observation unit (I checked myself in) I got the diagnosis...clinical depression! So I was prescribed Sertraline 50mg...im now at week 4...week 1 was hell, week 2 also, week 3 up & down like a yo yo but now I can say the drug is working!!!there were some side affects to begin with, headaches, diarreah, dizziness & extreme anxiety...I thought about stopping it was that bad but my GP told me to 'ride the storm'! I'm starting to feel normal, more happy than the ghost i was!i do get armpit sweats but I can live with that! Would just like to show a positive side & say to anyone in a similar situation as I was "hang in there,it does & will get better"

Hi Colin, nice positive post and a similar story to mine although Sertraline for me didn't truly kick in until after about 8 weeks! Now though I feel better than I've felt for years, truly remarkable.

Thanks Colin, it's nice to hear a positive story! I'm on week 4 of sertraline and I am so up and down! Today is particularly bad, but I'm sticking with this medication and hoping it gets better soon!

Great news Colin! Thanks for sharing. Yes, clinical depression mixed with anxiety can really be described as a storm because of the overwhelming thoughts & feelings. Mindfulness therapy has helped me to try and find the calm in that storm, focussing on the present moment rather than the past or the future. It doesn't make our present pain go away but it does offer us control, and prevent us from suffering with it more than we may need to.

Keep up the good work :-)

Thanks for your replies. Depression is a horrible disease I knew nothing about,it creeps up on you & strikes when you least expect it.

I can honestly say the route i was heading before I went & sought help does'nt bare thinking about!

Sertraline has definitely saved my life, the good days are starting to out weigh the bad,it's early days yet but I'm confident in time I can put all of this behind me & my head will be straightend out.

I hope you are all doing well & thanks for taking the time to read my story.

      Hi Colin, nice encouraging post.

Certainly as you say depression and anxiety seem to come from nowhere... one day we're fine then BANG, it hits us!! Finding the reason isn't always easy and even if we know the reason it's still not easy to combat the feeling so the meds on the market can be a real help in balancing us out (even though as I read, the medical professionals are not absolutely sure how!!)

Having said that the medication isn't the total answer and we need to do our part in seeking answers. Keeping a positive outlook really can help also talking about it and encouraging each other as we do on this forum is very beneficial.

Keep on that road to recovery mate and stay convinced that you can beat this by having the right outlook on life 😃
