Positivity

Afternoon all,

Just thought I’d post a positive discussion for a change to hopefully help those who are at the very beginning where I was two months ago.

I’m not sure whether this is just a good patch or whether I’m actually on the mend but for me I haven’t had the horror story what everyone mentions. I was very distressed when reading about mono and some of the forums such as this with people who have had such life changing, terrible experiences but for me I’ve been fairly quick at getting myself back to id say 80% now only 2 months on.

All physical symptoms other than slight deafness and a scratchy throat have disappeared and the tiredness is there but only slightly. Like I say this could be a false positive and I could crash but hopefully this is a start of a good recovery at just less than 2 months.

Everyone is very different and for some it is years, but for any of you recently diagnosed it is possible to feel much better earlier with the right rest, plenty of fluids, good healthy food and of course vitamins.

Praying that you all are enjoying this sunny day wherever you are in the world.

Keep positive guys, it will get better!

Xx

Hi, I have just been told today I have glandular fever from blood test results and have been feeling somewhat unwell for about 3 weeks but it is only the past few days that i feel horrendous, is this normal as by what I’ve been reading I should be starting to feel better after 3 weeks but I feel at my worst now with a burning fever, nausea and stomach pain. Just wondered if you could help as you have been through it x

      Hi Paige,

That’s exactly how I was. Felt unwell but I was going to work and doing normal things for yeah around a month and they thought I had tonsilitis so did a swab and bloods and it came back as GF.

That was last Wednesday so it’s only been 9 days for me and I feel 80% better really.

Worst days were thurs, fri and that weekend. By this Monday I started to feel much more like myself but very nauseous. Doctors gave me some anti nausea tablets which helped a lot! The fever has been on and off but over the last week it has gradually gone back to normal.

In no way do I feel I could run round the block or return to my job yet due to feeling tired after small activities but the recovery is certainly under way!

Feel free to ask me anything else xx

Thanks for the reply. It’s good to here a similar story. I wondered if you know if it’s normal or heard of to have glandular fever but no swollen glands? Xx

      Hi Paige,

Once being diagnosed with GF it’s very likely that whatever you’re feeling is completely normal. Not one persons symtoms are completely the same as someone else’s.

Despite saying this swollen glands are one of the most common symtoms as that is what the virus attacks, mine were and still are absolutely huge!

Not to worry if not tho it’s very normal to experience a range of symtoms. Hopefully for you, this symptom won’t present itself x

Ohhh thank you! Also, I don’t know if it’s was the same for you but I haven’t been in contact with anyone ill which could have caused me to get glandular fever? Finding it very strange to try and work out having been ill for nearly a month x

Basically Paige doctors told me that it can be passed through sneezing, coughing and using others cutlery and of course kissing! With me being at uni it could easily be any of the above however depending on your circumstances it can be very easy to catch it apparently as 90% of people by the age of 40 have the virus already with only 13% ever having symptoms! So even if someone isn’t visibly ill they could well have had the virus.

Symtoms will also not show for 6 weeks so you’ll of had it a lot longer than you think x

Thanks for the replies and sorry that I have so many questions!! Out of curiosity what tests did you have done to confirm your diagnosis? I had the mono spot test and am now worried as I have read about there being false positives due to a more serious cause.

Oh don’t be sorry I’ll happily answer for you as I know how stressful this is!

I basically just went to the doctor with my symtoms and said I thought it might be tonsilitis and he swabbed my throat to check for strep (which came back as fine) and then he took a few blood samples and sent them to labs to check for EBV, liver enzymes etc which came back as positive! Go back to doctors if you’re not happy as they’re there to help x

      Hi Pagie,

It is very normal to have glandular fever and not have swollen glands, it's just the name of the illness really, some folk get painful and swollen glands with it but not everyone, as Holly says everyone is different and the virus can affect different people in different ways.

As Holly says too can be transmitted in ways that you don't even realise, although it's not an air-borne virus it can be passed on through even things like drinking glasses and things like that - I didn't know how I caught it either and I think most people are the same, so try not to worry I know it's hard.

Also try not to worry about false positives, it definitely sounds from the symptoms you have that it is glandular fever and the monospot test for sure confirms that.

Just take each day as it comes right now and focus on coping and resting and being kind to yourself and giving yourself recovery time! Rember you are going to get better!

Oh Holly it's good to hear you are seeing some progress, that's great to hear and remember just take things slowly as sometimes with this virus there can be small lapses along the way, so remember that's normal and you will definitely get there until you are 100% again!

Positivity is so important, you are right and something I've not been so good at lately, it's not easy we all know when going through such a hard time - but it makes such a difference and it is half the battle for sure!
