Possible Fistula Surgery Failure

I underwent a fistulotomy about 7 weeks ago. I developed a fissure, which turned to an abscess, and eventually developed into a fistula. The fistula was deemed superficial and recovery went pretty well. I had very little discharge and bleeding post surgery. The pain was moderate at times, but bearable. Around the 10 day mark, the pain had greatly subsided. Since that point, I had had no discharge & no pain. Things seemed to be getting back to normal. About a week ago, I started feeling a tightness near the original abscess area. This turned to pain and around 2 days of a large amount of blood and puss discharge. This was far more than I had ever experienced pre and post- surgery. I am still having a small amt of discharge and pain at times. Is this a normal set back in recovery or does it sound like the surgery has failed? The medical assistant I spoke with said this could be from straining. I have an appt, with my surgeon next week. Just hoping someone had a similar experience & could offer advise. Thank you.
