Possible gallstones - awaiting scans
Posted , 7 users are following.
I've had pain in my upper abdomen right side, that goes up to my right chest area and upper bk for 3 weeks now.
The episodes last anything from 4 hrs right through the day or night or both.
It has now started to interfere with my every day activities- I've had to have the last 2 days off work due to it.
My GP is going to arrange a scan to confirm if it is gallstones or not but I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or ideas on what I can do to ease the pain. I'm currently laid on my couch with a hot water bottle under my upper back.
What can I eat, for the past 3 weeks I've been living on water, crackers, salad and a chicken fillet with the odd evening meal of salmon, whole meal pasta but that even seems to start off the pain. I've cut out crisps, biscuits, chocolate, fries, anything fast foody and I'm just at the point of having had enough. I no longer want to go out and socialise due to the fear of it happening when I'm out. Im just hoping someone can help or has some more information for me.
Thanks

Hi there.
I am in exactly the same situation as you at the min, with the same symptoms. I tend to feel my pain coming and then it just builds up, right in the middle of my stomach and to the right side of my ribs and around my back. I too, am awaiting a scan. I am also going for a breath test tomorrow, to see if I have the helicobacter virus and I am having blood tests the following day, including one for pancreatitis. I'm really hoping it is going to be helicobacter as this can then be treated with strong antibiotics.
I have tried various food, small meals, large meals, no meals. There don't seem to be any pattern. I have bought some peppermint tea with selenium in, to help digestion, if nothing else.
I have had to take time off work to, as it can just flare up at any time and when it does, I just need to lie on my left side with my knees up. It is no fun whatsoever and I am also beginning to think about avoiding going places just in case.
Best of luck and like me, hope you get your diagnosis soon.

I am actually sat at the hospital waiting to see someone about getting a scan today. I've been here since 8:45am. Had to go to A&E this morning, the pain last night and this morning was unbearable. I'm really hoping to have to scan today. I've had some codiene with paracetamol but at the moment it doesn't seem to be taking the pain off.

Hi, sorry to hear things have got worse. Unfortunately codeine and paracetamol don't really touch the pain when its that bad, you might want to take some anti-inflammatories as well such as ibruprofen.
Let me know how you get on?

I hope you get some help there...I finally had to go to the ER (in the US) to get the ball rolling. I got an ultrasound while there and they finally found gallstones!
I know you're in pain; sometimes pain relievers seem to make the pain worse, not better. But remember that your liver's probably already in distress and has to metabolize whatever you take, so ask a doctor what else would be safe to take.
Please let us know how you get on!

I've had my X-rays and scans and the consultants have confirmed I have gallstones and slight inflammation of the gallbladder. Been in hospital for two days now. Waiting to check my bloods again as blood count was low and having antibiotics by IV. Consultant has referred me onto a specialist who will look into surgery to remove the gallbladder asap. Fingers crossed I get to go home tomorrow.

I was totally exhausted. All day yday I slept and mostly had a good nights sleep. It's one of the better nights sleep I've had pain free. Hope your feeling much better soon.

I'm glad you went to the hospital and that the gallstones were found. Apparently, your gallbladder was irritated, hence, the inflammation. Hopefully, the antibiotics will take care of it, and you'll be able to rid yourself of your gallbladder as soon as possible. You were as sick as you feared you were!
I hope that you're relieved to learn what has been going on, and to know that you're finally getting something done about it!
Please be careful to get the rest you need, as you'll want to be in the best shape you can be before you have surgery. I am hoping that they give you sufficient pain meds so that you can rest!
Thanks for letting me know, and please keep in touch! I'll help in any way I can.
